Poor Tim, instead of looking at his photos on his beautifully calibrated workspace he’d rather monitor the equivalent of paint drying.

I’d also go with 28mm on full frame. The resolution on these digital camera is so good you can crop and still get a decent image. So, for me, who doesn’t print/view big, a 28mm on a dig camera would be as useful as the original tri-elmar on film.

Fair enough, Mark, and to be honest, I’ve changed with respect to capturing memories. When I was young, travelling and seeing the world was everything but as important was the fact it was transient and never ending. I remember thinking documenting stuff with a camera as being slightly nerdy.

 

Nowadays, like I mentioned, i photograph everything.

In my most recent trip (may-jul this year) from St Petersburg to Kunming via Korea and Japan almost all photos I’ve taken have been mnemonics - hotel rooms, toilets, under the bed, bars, train stations. All crap but I like them and know they will come in handy.

I travelled quite extensively as a young man without a camera and couldn’t remember in any detail trips that I’d made to, say, Peru twenty years down the line. I’m not forgetful and I know I’ve been there.

 

When sites like flickr came on line I searched for photos of Machu Pichu in the hope they would rekindle something more but they didn’t and i think that was because i hadn’t mapped my experiences onto photographs (sounds a bit obvious, eh?). To me, my faint memories of Peru are all about feelings - anger, joy, ecstasy, relief, fear- of doing the climb. Feelings that I doubt i could have captured on camera.

 

So, I no longer regret not having a camera on those trips. There are plenty of great photos of N&S America, Canada, Soviet Union, etc taken by others that I can admire and I still have my vague memories and I like it like that.

Andrew, it is tough at times no doubt about it. To allay others’ paranoia etc and until you’ve built up your own portfolio you could always show people examples of street photos, taken by others, that you like and tell them this is what you are striving for. Be clear they are not your own photos (you wouldn’t want to come across some smart alec ) and that you are starting out in SP. You could also tell them you normally do WP (and show them some of your own) but you fancy branching out.

I’m sorry to hear that Tim. IIRC, the TG-4 uses a proprietary cable for in camera charging. Do you think that might be the problem? Could you not try charging the battery with a cheap external battery charger? They have them on amazon uk for about £8-10. Probably cheaper where you are.

Fred, I’ve always thought of it as a leap of faith which is what made the photo special for me.

its the instantaneous aspect of recognizing content and form as it happens that maybe separate it from other photography forms.

 

i suppose, thinking about it, that it is the instantaneous aspect that distinguishes SP from WP. I mean there can’t be that many people who wander around the serengeti hoping to snap a decisive moment. there is a lot more planning involved in WP which is not to say SPers don’t study their surroundings.

actually dave’s comment shows just how much moderating has slipped of late. not only have several posts gone against community guidelines (no comments on moderation) but suggesting a moderator could be a jerk would have incurred a ban years ago.

In what way, and with what forums, are you having problems?

And I see this thread as starting from a sense of leaving the comfort zone, and trying to understand better what "is and is not" about

 

Wouter, fair enough, but this thread evolved into photo book recommendations. Even so, I see Andrew’s posts as fairly naive. He talks about liking every photo in a genre even though he’s an experienced photographer and must know that’s not possible, he mentions FOMO and generally seems lost wrt SP. Therefore, I see no problem with trying to direct him, in the first instance, to something he is familiar with.

I don't think he was. Like no photographer could be in such an instantaneous moment of instinct and intuition when pressing the shutter.

Phil, just out of interest, if you had shot 20+ frames with a modern film/ digital camera that could’ve captured the leap from start to finish which image would you have selected in post?

Andrew, you could save yourself some time by writing down what things in photography generally please you. Thinking about high level things like

 

1. content

2. composition

2. exposure

 

will help narrow things down.

 

As an example a friend of mine shot professionally but for his personal stuff he had two golden rules

 

1.it must have a great composition and

2. it must have a good range of tonal separation (b&w)

 

Consequently, he hated the HCB photo. Just like he hated colour photos, digital photos, most “voyeuristic” street photography.

 

SP is huge. You won’t like it all but don’t let that stop you finding what you do like.
