There's a beautiful sense of movement in this photo, from the stormy, incandescent clouds to the frayed rush of the waves on the beach that comes straight to our feet. Very attractive, indeed!

It's a fine composition, and I like the way the focus has been placed. The background bokeh, too, is attractive.  It would be helpful to know what lens you were using (macro?) and the focal distance.

  1. I love the contrast between the sombre landscape and the bright, spectral lines of the Northern Lights. To have caught the moon between the two green arms adds very strongly to the general impact. Very impressive.

Beautiful detail in the plumage, and a nicely seasonal branch on which to pose as well. It's an excellent edition to what I think is a very attractive series of bird shots in your portfolio.

There is great expression in all the faces and the four together provide a a great slice of life. The photo also appears very true to life and is a fine documentary. I think the muted colour, too, has been wisely chosen.

The lighting really makes this portrait, with the very dramatic contrasts it introduces. Maybe I have seen too many 'cloak and dagger' movies, but I think there's an almost Medieval feel about this portrait. Again, the zip is perhaps the pointer to modernity.

It's a magnificent image of the peaks, and the reflection makes it all the more impressive. From the foreground to the mountain tops, there's a nice completeness about the composition. When I looked at it at first, I thought the strong polarization of light in the top right-hand corner, which darkens that part of the sky quite a bit, introduced an imbalance and might have been evened out in PP, but since it also corresponds to the encroaching shadow on the right, it really doesn't matter that much. It's a great shot, and with truly enviable lighting provided by nature.

The strongly lit figure of the woman against a dark background reminds me a lot of certain Renaissance portraits. The eye-contact is particularly good. It draws our own eyes straight into the person portrayed.

It's a very attractive image, Harry, with beautiful lighting and texture. I must confess there's one little thing that 'disturbs' me: the cup-handle is angled away from my hand as I approach the table. Psychologically, if not artistically, I feel the inclination to recompose: to place the cup in front of the roses, the handle towards my hand, and to put the cookies where the cup is. Maybe that's an intrusion of the gastronomic in my appreciation of the image, so you can take it with a pinch of salt!

  3. It's a photo that, to my mind, does full justice to the majestic intent of the architecture. From the point of view of symmetry and the interplay of lines, the composition is truly striking. It may be that this kind of balanced harmony appears more static than dynamic, but it certainly satisfies our desire for ordered beauty.

I like the simplicity of the composition, which relies on the strong contrast of light and shadow. The colours, too, match harmoniously. I'm not sure where you have placed the focus, however, since the image appears slightly soft throughout. But that, perhaps, is the effect you have wished to create...

It is indeed a very artistic image, Saleem. My only misgiving would be that the bough in the upper part of the photo is rather strong in shape and colour and imposes itself on the viewer, to the detriment of the subtler lines and hues in the lower part. I have the impression of an imbalance that could perhaps be attenuated. It is, nonetheless, a beautiful capture.

    Alien Temple

The splayed, fan-like cloud formation is to some extent the result of the use of a wide-angle lens, but what makes this photo so special, I think, is the unique correspondence, even in colour, between the sky and the striated rock formation below. I wouldn't go so far as to call this 'alien' or even 'surreal', but you certainly have all the ingredients of a very striking image.

What a wonderful style you have, Kemal! Every image reveals that style, and yet each creation has its own distinctive charm. In this one, the muted harmony of colour, the wistful beauty of expression, the way the figure dissolves into (or emerges from) the background (the Ground of Being?), are all mesmerising.

  4. It's a beautiful moment that you have captured. The dramatic contrast in lighting turns the scene into something of "a war of two worlds", and it looks as though the light will be engulfed in darkness in the end. Fleeting beauty!

The parcimony with which detail is given to create the image and convey the desired artistic impression is beautifully calculated. The elegant intensity of facial expression directs our attention to the second point of interest: the hands that tune the violin. It truly is an eloquent image.

Thanks Pierre, Harry and Hamid for the welcome comments. Hamid, I see the advantage, as you show so well in your reworking of the image, of changing the light to give greater contrast. It is, indeed, an improvement. Harry, I'm not sure what breed of dog it is, but he was certainly in his element in the snow. I forgot to get him to sign a model release, so I hope he doesn't mind my sneak candid of him.
