NX Studio is actually a great software. I use it occasionally when I shoot rented Nikon cameras in a studio. So is Canon DPP for Canon users. -

I think the best solution is to shoot RAW and use a raw editor that comes with your camera. Excellent results straight away, no waisting time on tweaking things. -

My attempt: basic rgb curves to darken everything and keep a neutral color of the image (probably too much), inverted and blurred (bit too much..) red channel to darken highlights, applied red channel for contrast, usm high radius for detail.

My exaggerated version, channel mask for the sky, inverted channels for water and trees, curves for color.
