Props to you for capturing those guys so clearly while they were riding at umpteen miles per hour! That HAD to be a tough capture.

You're looking at the gnarly roots of an uprooted tree that had fallen in the forest. I took a closeup shot with the idea in mind that it should look like an abstract painting focused on tone and contours.

A tribute to James Nares, who gets this look in single strokes using

    HUGE brushes.

Carl, thanks for the example. I do think you made it look better. I'll have to see what I can do to bring out the color like that.

Ken, I appreciate your candid response. It's not something I would've thought about doing, as I was going for a deeper DOF; but I'll keep it in mind for next time.

I wish there was something more profound and informative I could say besides this, but the reality is that I saw this picture and only thought, "That is CRAZY cool!"

Unbelievably well done. Makes me want to get the lens you used and play!

I like all of the different greens and yellows in this, and you've also created a nice half-and-half contrast of light and shape. It really works... and I want one of those grapes!
  1. I love the geometry in this shot -- all of the intersecting planes, the square opening within the rectangular wall, etc. I think the angle is also very compelling, much more so than it would've been had you shot it straight on. The contrast between what is within the walls and what is beyond them makes an interesting statement. Very well done.

Thank you for clarifying and posting this. Beautiful color range in this one, from the redish light of the left side to the cool green of the upper right. The contour of the base of the cavern is interesting as well. This photo definitely offers a more comprehensive view of the place than the previous. My only critique would be that the focus seems soft. Did you have to use a very slow shutter in there? (I ask because I had similar problems shooting a lava tube in Maui.)

Should Microsoft pay me to make this a stock windows desktop

    background, or am I crazy?

I'm not sure if you shot this in color and converted it, but if you did good on you. It's a perfect candidate for B+W. You've done well with the contrast, focus, and DOF. I really like it, especially all the different textures, ranging from prickly (foreground, right) to soft (clouds).
