This photo makes me feel like I'm looking at a casual shot of a famous movie star from back in the day. It makes you want to look at it, so much personality. Well done.

Thanks for any thoughtful critique.

David,
Thank you for your thoughtful critique and suggestions. I really appreciate them. The equipment I was using for the shot is outlined under "Technical Details:" A 40D, 70-200mm f/2.8 lens all the way out. You're right that the image was cropped. I would've needed the 100-400 to have the bird fill the frame in the original shot. Something to put on the Christmas list, I guess!
Thanks for the tips about the lighting and so forth!
Love,
Judith

I know this is not a knock-'em-dead bird shot, but I post it for tworeasons:
1. It was an exciting moment seeing an endangered species, and Iwanted to share that excitement with you all.
2. I was hoping that some of you avid bird photographers could give meconstructive tips on how to do this better. (This is the second timeI've tried shooting a moving bird.)
Kudos to Chuck Babbit for his incredible condor pictures on here... ifhe's around and want to weigh in, all the better.

What do you think? Any pointers for improving the lighting? How
about color; would it be better if you could see the vibrance of the
make-up and the flowers or does the BW work because of the theme?
Any comments or critiques would be appreciated.

Does this work as is or would it be better if more of the bottom of
the trees were visible? ALL comments & critiques welcome!

Thanks, Thomas. I'll revisit the sharpening and see if I can tone that down. I appreciate your honest feedback!

This is one of the most exceptional captures of this moment that I've ever seen. The only thing that might have improved (to me) would have been an ever so slightly smaller aperture so that mom's face was discernible. Otherwise, it's brilliant!

Does this crop work for you? Given the limitations of the lens I was
working with, how does the moon look? Any and all C&C would be
welcome. Thanks.

Is there any way to sharpen the edges of the silhouette? I feel like if they were crisper, this would almost take on the quality of a woodcut. It's quite lovely.

the image were in BW with greater contrast and a slight crop? You're allowed to vehemently disagree with this idea, but I am coming from a good place. Also, were you shooting with a lens hood on? I see some shading in both of the right corners.
BTW -- I laughed out loud at the shot you've got of a baby in a dumptruck! So fabulous.
Regards,
Judith

Credit where credit is due, Raoul. Thank you for yours!

I like this concept, but feel like there is room for improvement. Any
suggestions on how I can get more focus throughout the rest of the
frame? Do I need that?
All comments and critiques would be welcome.

Very nice. I like all of the rectangular lines and color. As someone already noted, this is a nice composition. One thing I might do is pop out the color a bit more and see if I could up the clarity/sharpness... but those are small details. The photo is fantastic.
