I labeled the quails as street because are part of the small photo-documentary I made about the exhibitions held at The Witte Museum (San Antonio, Texas) . The exhibition encompasses paleontology, wildlife and primitive cultures of the trans-pecos area of Texas.

I liked how the close plane makes the image to loose sense of anatomy but it gives sense of abstraction...

Can you try the same image but illuminating from the front? You will see how the texture of the scales makes a good change of mood. I have some snakes in my portfolio.. you may take a look ...

Allow me please to answer a little bit for you... 

YES.. I am in agree with you about the eyes... a 'little" detail that scape off hands when you are in the middle of the action... !

About " Other than to get the lighting, I couldn't think why you would want to pipette on a light box and not in a fume cupboard. As a scientist I really don't like the idea of sticking my face in my work and on that level, it's a bit of a no-no."

He does not need to work in a fume hood... If he would have needed, OF COURSE I would have put him to work in the hood...! The content of the little chamber is harmless under this working conditions, there is plenty of air flow and he was not as close as it seems in the image.. The  light box helps us to "see" the wells where to put the samples.. believe me that the procedure is safe.

 I really appreciate your feedback! some times you may loose some details when you are in the middle of the action!

Yes, it seems to be a difficult lighting situation, but I truly believe that every challenging situation is an opportunity to put or creativity to play!

IMHO, using fill flash would have been one option... 

I may think that the flag is an important part of the composition... mmmm, ok.. what if you would have turned the model toward the flag...? I can see that the flag side of the young lady is illuminated (look at the hat) while the other side is shadowed... Turning the model 45 degrees to the flag side and locating your self at this side you would have put her face into the light but also still with shadows that provide a 3D sensation.

Now, with the digital era, there is not WASTING of FILM any more... so I encourage you to unleash your imagination and creativity and shoot as much as you may want....! Something interesting has to rise!

Nice try!. i would have preferred to get closer, if it is possible or to crop the snake in a way that most of the frame get occupied with the snake. In this image, the actual attractive part occupies approximately 1/5 or 1/6 of the whole space... Snakes are very interesting subjects, but also complex to photograph... Watch out the focus of the eye... if you get an terrific image/pose, but the eye(s) is(are) not in perfect focus... the image will lose impact...

SNakes are my favorite animals to photograph... I have some images in my photo,net portfolio... you may take a look if you want...

I am going to take your image and crop it... you you will see my idea....

Simply great!. the eyes contrast with the lagoon.. the lagoon completely frames the eyes... I think it is a good opportunity to enlarge it to poster size and put it in a great frame!

It took me a little to relate the title with the image... the wave of the arc of the bridge is the first element that jumped to my eye... it is very harmonic.. After looking at the title was that I began to look for the second part of the "X". I was looking at it as reflection of the arc, but I had to consider the base of the bridge to see the "X".

Congratulations for your creative composition and handcrafting of the image. Great esthetic sence!

Nice shot! You were lucky to find an snake eating another snake... The grass leaf crossing the eye of the snake interferes with the impact of the image... ! I understand that sometime there are external factor that are difficult to correct!

I think that based on your working conditions, the portrait is pretty nice... It is not easy to photographs snakes... but, in your case, the snake seems to have collaborated with you... It has a good position, the head is completely visible.. the body can also be seen, the eye looks sharp...
