My deepest condolence... I know what can mean when you lose a snake.
About your photograph, I find it a little bit dark FOR MY "taste", but it is an interesting composition! The blurry wood stick at the left frame the head and bring it to the viewer...
If you do not mind, please take a look to my portfolio where I have some snakes...
Congratulations

I do not want to sound as silly... and it might not be a photographic feed back... but I think looks cute!

Interesting subject... Are you able to move the skeleton? Bones are very nice subjects to try in B&W using high contrast! Play with it!. I remembered my early years as biologist preparing my zoology classes.
I have done some snake skulls, are in my photo.net portfolio, just using AA MagLite flash lights.. It was aver y fun and illustrative experience. TRY IT.
Congratulations for your creativity

I have been dealing with snakes since 1986... I have been curator of two academic serpentariums, one in Venezuela and another here in Texas... + my own snakes in Venezuela... I have learn that snakes can die FOR NOTHING....
If the snake was contorted, as you mentioned... that COULD be a problem produced by a virus that attacked the central nervous system... You mentioned that female went to hibernation... I was wondering if you dropped the temperature to induce hibernation... If you did it and the male stayed active at low temperature,he probably went immunosuppressed becoming sensitive to the possible infection.... It is just a supposition
