Thanks for the comments. In retrospect the sky does look quite overdone. It was more like the color of the sky in the lower right sky area. And that glaring white cloud in the center top area is now burning a hole in my retina. I put together 5 exposures on Photomatix and came out with this. I am rather new to HDR and haven't played around too much with it. I was much more focused on coming up with a fairly real representation of the rock colors and really disregarded the sky altogether while I was doing that. Oops. Back to the drawing board.
  1. I love it. It is a menacing sky balanced by a hostile foreground. I agree with Kim in some respects. I think if the foreground had been brought into more prominence and detail, it would look even better. I think it could still be done with all else you brought together. I like your commentary as well.

I was on my belly for this one. That hike gets harder every time. I almost couldn't get

up. This is an HDR composite of 5 images. I think the colors are faithful to the sky and

clouds that day. Late afternoon the day after a hard Thanksgiving rain. Is is too

    contrasty?

This is awesome! I wouldn't change a thing. I think this works better than your picture with the tree in the foreground. I saw this one second. I realize they are taken at different locations but in retrospect, I think the tree in the first is a distraction from this incredible gash in the Earth. This is great.

The official Canyonlands National Park brochure has this viewpoint with this tree in the foreground as its cover photo. Green River Overlook. I think the interplay of the tree branches and the dendritic erosion in the background is great. I do not think the canyon wall to the left is a distraction. I agree with one of the above comments about it adding depth and perspective. I must say that I like your other posted photo without the tree much better. As for the sky, I would leave it as is. I don't think I would crop it.
  2. I love Zion and the Southwest and have been in a lot of spots shooting in the shade towards something in sunlight. It looks to me that the foreground is flat and the background is too bright. I have taken a million of these and find it very frustrating. I am not sophisticated enough at Photoshop to isolate the different areas to work on well enough to resolve the problem. That being said, I am intrigued by the reflection in the water. I think I would have made that more of a focal point of the photo. Maybe going towards that tree...
  3. I love the composition and lighting. The panoramic format works very well. Is this a composite of several images? I have been to Agathla and Monument Valley a few times but I don't remember and vistas like this or mountains right there.
  4. Craig- I was there! I camped at Homestake that night! There were two other vehicles parked about 100 yards south at a different campsite. Small world. This is the first time I walked over to the hill where these things apparently start from at the southeast end of the lakebed. There were dozens of rocks with tracks. These two were about 150 yards north of there. I drove out Saturday AM around 0900. There were 3 vehicles already parked at Racetrack out for the morning shoot. I had enough...

    Thanks all for the critiques.
