  1. Thanks Les and Dave. Dave - no polarizer, but I did have to try a bunch of shots to get this to come out right, experimenting with the three metering methods on the D300 as well as exposure compensation. Bumped the blues up a tad in Lightroom 2.0, but nothing major. It was as beautiful of a day as I'd seen in a long time.
  2. Hey David, neat shot. I do a fair amount of shooting in Lancaster county, too. Is this up Middlecreek way? This makes me want to experiment with taking a whole image and playing with artificial framing - always thought that looked cool when done right, but I always forget to give it a try! Please visit my portfolio where you'll see a bunch of lancaster shots.

I'm just dying to grab ahold of the image and tilt it ever so slightly to align the edges. But I like this concept - the tree branches almost give it an artistic, crumpled and "crackled" overlay type of look. You've done a nice job of capturing a brightly lit building against a deep blue sky, as well.

This photo is very dark and could use some contrast; having a hard time determining if it's sharp or not. Also I might consider cropping it vertically. How did you set your metering? Might want to experiment with different metering options - spot, center weighted, or matrix. Keep at it.

Hey everybody, thanks for the comments. Color came up a few times. I'm not sure what else I would have done differently in post, because those ARE pretty much the real colors from the scene. Or should I be looking at it differently? Thanks again!

Katherine, great shot - I tried for a sunset like this once and didn't get one this nice. Sky looks awesome, and you can really see the landscape with nice gradations.

Most parents take tons of pictures of their kids in the pool, myself

included...but for some reason I felt this one just "worked." What do

    you think? TIA for critique.

the only thing I'd do is photoshop-out the tower thingie in the middle. Because it's so thin, it doesn't seem to provide a good reference for perspective anyways. Really neat photo otherwise - makes me want to get out on my bike!
  3. IMO, the page curl just says "photoshop" to me and reminds me that I'm looking at a digital alteration, versus a very pleasing painting treatment of some tulips. Otherwise very nice.
  4. this one came out nicely. I'd love to see what it looks like cropped in tight, too, so that the dense area in the center fills the frame.

I was going to take my camera out for fireworks as well - same situation as you, I finally think I have the gear and know-how to do it...but thought, "maybe I'll travel light and skip it this time."

we were there two minutes and I was wishing I had brought it along...

I've done a lot of photos like this, and they can be tough. good cropping, nice subject, seems to be sharp enough - just underexposed a little. This would probably benefit from bring up the shadow detail a bit, and maybe a increasing green luminance. did you use any flash? an external strobe set to TTL/fill light really does wonders, especially if you're shooting RAW and can manipulate the white balance a bit afterwards.

I think the perspective it what really makes it interesting, as the child leans into the frame. Nice and sharp just where it needs to be, especially the eyes.

Nguyen - nice work, this really caught my eye, probably because of the colors and smoothness. You did a good job of capturing details too. The only thing I'd change is maybe crop some off the top, maybe to the top edge of the green circle (bokeh) on the upper right.
