1.
andrew,

thanks for the explaination of the eye-fi...I still forget to "google" stuff instead of bothering people...doh!

lol

RT

I have the 14-42 lens that comes standard with the E-PL3. I see that there are other lenses too and seem very low priced but "with cheap K-to-Micro Four Thirds adapter" !!! tell me more!! that is very interesting. I can see my Tamron 70-300 sitting on the front of this PL3...lol

The sensor thing is an issue for us isnt it. it just doesnt feel right if its too small. I dont even blow up shots bigger than 8X11 but I like to have the power under the hood.

it might be silly but its just a preference

 2.
Patrick, If I was able to get it for $183 I'd have gotten 2! lol

David, thanks for the big thumbs up.

Andrew,

I picked up an Olympus E-PL3 and also a E-P3
I like the PL3 better even though the P3 is supposed to be a "better" camera and the PL3's big brother. I wanted a P/S type with a bigger sensor than 1.2/3

what do I want from the K01 that I dont get from the Olympus......nothing. I loved the K01 but returned it too quickly because of the poor low light auto focusing problem. thought something was wrong with it.

The Olympus is for times when a DSLR is too much to drag along, not allowed in places where "professional" camera's are not allowed and just all around snapping with a better sensor than your every day Canon Elf type camera's

Basically I just "want" it and want it in my arsenal.......

I play Bass guitar and have a few of them...different instrument for different applications...know what I mean ;)

Thanks guys for your input

 3.
Mark,

you say they are reintroducing the K-01!

cool

looks aside it did sit nice in my hands too. I would like a K30 but not really "necessary" I got the K100D which is still a fine camera for my uses, just got an Olympus E-PL3 which is a great little camera with a 4/3rds sensor. I will look into the Swivi that will probably be the deal maker...I wear reading glasses now so I know exactly what you mean about needed the diopter

Thanks!

 4.
Patrick,

"Focus is slow in low (average indoor) light, even with the upgraded firmware."

I got rid of mine because of that and before I heard about the update...disappointing it didnt help.

"Flimsy card slot door. I got around this by using an Eye-fi card so I never need open it."

agreed but what the hell is a eye Fi card???

better than the K100D! I still use mine regularly

:( lol

 5.
so, I just got a small M4/3rds camera for like P/S situations when I cant have my big camera with me.

I still love that K01 for the short time I had it and want to get another. but that design is so screwy.
do you think that Pentax has any plans anytime soon to put out a more normal looking not so clunky version of a mirrorless camera?

I can get one for like $300 body only $429 or so for the 40MM flat lens

is that 40mm lens worth the buck 30 or would that camera be just as well suited with the 18-55 mm kit lens

?

thanks

 6.
the verdict is in

I am keeping the E-PL3. I did not like the handling of the P3 at all.
rear screen was brighter and the menu colors were more visually pleasing but the shutter button was very sensitive and the wheel on the back was in the way and changed things inadvertently.
IQ to me in auto and P was better in the PL

I actually liked the smaller size of the PL3 than the chunkiness of the P3....it was also too Film camerish than the PL

thanks for the replies...all opinions are appreciated

 7.
I picked up a E-P3 to side by side.

so far I am not getting the wow factor from the P3.
I think I like the feel and performance of the PL3 better so far. I am not seeing a lot of difference in IQ.
where I thought the PL3 had some handling issues I dont like the wheel or the sluggish to trippy shutter button.
I have fired off a few shots just touching it and that wheel is right under the thumb.
the grip is not a deal breaker either. not as important as I thought it might be.

 8.
But of course different cameras suit different people, which is why we have so many of them!
Too many!

lol

Side by Side the PL2 is much bigger and has the hand grip.

http://camerasize.com/compare/#196,157

I like the weight of the PL3 but it feels as if I may drop it at any moment. Picture quality is really nice so far in auto.

maybe I just have to get used to its size which is not "totally" a problem

but this one is a little bigger
http://camerasize.com/compare/#196,155

Thanks Robin

 9.
Robin,

Thanks, The menu options and access is quite different that Pentax. I flip through those like I made them. this is a little more involved but I have noticed that with other camera's I have tried in the stores. there seems to be a lot of scrolling and little ups and down's that simply arent there with Pentax or its just that I am more comfortable with the layout of Pentax...

anyway, the Camera is really really nice. nice weight fast shooting and Holy Cow! what crisp vivid shots it takes in iAuto. regardless of my slow learning with the menu options, I did get this to shoot in auto mostly so its getting a major wow from me on that end.

I do find the body just a hair too small for my comfort. it certainly feels well built but a little short. I think I am going to go to the E-P3...I like the size difference and the button layout looks more like what I would be comfortable with.

the PL5 is no bigger that the PL3 and I am not dropping that much coin on the P5 when I just wanted a point and shoot with a big sensor...lol

if I was going to spend that much I would just get the K30. that would be next year. The P3 is under 350 and I will get another k01 and be happy. I did really like that one.

:)

 10.
I got the E-PL3 and it seems like a nicely built camera.

I am having a hell of a time with the menu settings :(

seems like the K100D. K01, and i10 all are very simple compared to this Olympus. I cant even find a way to change the MP, ISO, speed or aperture yet

 11.
I got the E-PL3 today. its a lot bigger in the hand than it looks in the pictures.

Seems solid also.

I am having great difficultly navigating the Menu's. seems to be a bit of learning curve compared to the Pentax camera's I use.

the manual has pages to check thing out on...like iso settings...pg 48...manual only goes to pg31 :(

cant seem to find MP either

I'll play with it more tomorrow

 12.
Thanks Stephen,

I have been shooting with a Pentax K1000 since I was a kid then switched to digital with the K100D since 2006.

I had a Kodak Z612 which wasnt really small like my wife's canon Elf. this one seems small from the pictures but sadly no one has any of the PEN line of camera's around here. its all Nikon and Canon so trying one is not an option unfortunately.

my E-PL3 is sitting in my local post office waiting for delivery. I have a Pentax I10 that I ogt as a toy but turned out to be a pretty good little camera and its very small. I think the Pen is bigger but we'll find out tomorrow.

I see a lot of conflicting reviews about the Pen camera's. best thing to do is try it myself and see how it is. Technical review not peoples opinion seem very positive

 13.
Jamie,

I have been shooting with a Pentax K100D and a pocket Pentax I10...

Its a 6MP dslr but certainly not top of the line. it is a great camera, I love it and it works for me. its a 2006 model I believe.

what I am looking for in the E-PL3 is a compact that I can take into places that ban "professional" cameras and not have the small 1/2.3 sensor like most compacts.

I did not want to give up sensor size and control over the camera just to have a pocket camera set on auto like a canon elf

 14.
thanks for that review link. I only checked Dpreview.

everything after that seemed like a foreign language...lol

I dont shoot Raw and I dont use photoshop so basically what I see is what I shoot and I dont change it. its how I shoot.

"Current sensor technology vs. 4-5 year old technology. The E-PL3 uses a sensor Olympus has been using since at least as far back as the E5 DSLR. It was way overdue being replaced."

^thats disappointing

"There's a reason why cameras like the E-PL3 and E-P3 now sell for the prices they do. The upgraded models are superior in every way. Lower prices are all that will move the older models."

crap! I thought I got that thing for a song....apparently a sad song

I'll check out the other ones you mentioned.

Thanks Greg

 15.
I am surprised after reading the review of the E-PL3 that the IQ is not so good after ISO400.
I think I am more surprised because of the sensor size in that camera...I guess I assumed the bigger sensor would just naturaly gather more light

its a 4/3rd sensor and how is that last generation?

on the other hand I dont usually shoot in low light situations so this may not even be an issue for me..I ordered it the other day. well see what it is when I get it.
thanks

 16.
interesting.I am about to pull the trigger on a PL-3 but was considering the PL5 momentarily being its the newest version.

I guess tried and true is the way to go...

Stephen, how long have you had the PL3 and how do you like it?

 17.
so I used Dp's side by side with the E-PL3 and the P3 next to Nikon cool pix 7700, Canon Gx1 g15, Pentax Ko1

I still like the PL3 for my needs. I may go P3 just because its a little longer and I like the idea of the grip but I dont like the non tilting screen and touch.

I then went back and compared the P3 PL3, P5,PL5 and other than rear screen resolution of the P5...the PL3 still seems to be the best bang for the buck...

seems like an awesome little camera

 18.
"YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary"

lol and get the concept. I am just slow on the uptake with internet/texting lingo. I just found out what FSFW meant.

I checked a bunch of shots from my trip and 75% are within 18-55/75mm. I think the 14-42mm that the E-pl3 comes with will be fine to start with.

as for the view finder, yeah, on the K100D obviously its a must but getting older and now using reading glasses regularly I am screwing up sometimes. besides I dont have an issue with using the lcd to line up shots...doesnt seem to e a deal killer for me. in fact I use my I10 daily for documenting stuff at work.

I was looking at the E-P3 and other than the flash, grip and being slightly longer I see no need to spend the extra hundred bucks

thanks for the input. I think I found my back up camera.

 19.
Gup, Yes I use Dpreview ALL the time. its a great resource. I just figured someone here had real life experience. other than the basics body size, that grip and the rear LCD I could find anything significant to justify the $100 difference. I actually like the features of the smaller one better and thats my aim...to have a nice sized sensor, a 18-55 MM lens so that when my DSLR is too much to drag around I wont feel lacking in IQ

Leslie, IU??

Touch screen is no draw for me or more buttons. I dont mind menu driven features...I guess that narrows it down for me.

thank you both for your input
