    Death by digital...

          16
I love this concept! I myself am a child of the digital age, I never shot Film but I can completely understand the loss. This is a fantastic representation of that. I just have one Tiny Minute critique... The name of the image is DEATH...its not "the END of an era" or "the SETTING of an era" especially with u referencing the titanic and ship sinking. Death, Sinkings, Loss...its rarely ever clean, strait, or flat. Death by nature is messy and I believe if the name of your image is "Death of an Era" the image shouldn't be sooo clean and strait, ships sink one side first...getting to my point... so maybe if the camera was sinking into the water at a slight angle ...for me that would completely set the image as well as the concept WAY over the top....but as i said that is a VERY minute critique. :P

..oh and also i prefer the name "Death by Digital" better then "Death of an Era" the former has a nice ironic tone to it personally because of the concept that Diginal photography has begun to kill off film, but also because the water was added digitally, adds that touch of irony.

But other then those 2 minuscule things....FANTASTIC WORK.

edit: Wow I just realized how long that was...sorry all :(

  1. This is my first shot of a Sea Horse and I was reading in my ID guidethat they tend to turn away from divers and look down, any suggestionson getting on a level playing field with these guys so I can get moreinventive with the angles and such....(Without moving the Seahorse.)Thanks

I do have separate strobes, I use 2x Ikelite DS-125 substrobes, for macro i always keep the defusers on them.but...ummm i would love to change the light angle but this critter is only 1 1/4in long....i don't really have a ton of movement room on that hehe...Thnx though I appreciate the tidbit about the post process

This shot is very basic/bland in composition in my eyes but its a shotof a very small critter, so I was wondering is there any way to shoota little guy like this more effectively in the wild? Thanks

I had to do a lot of post on this guy because of how dark he wasoriginally. Was it too much is it too noticeable? Does the pose makeup for the slightly graininess? Thanks

How do the colors strike you? I had a problem with a Very heavy cyanhue in this shot because the turtle was just too far away for what iwanted. So an suggestions on removing Cyan more efficiently? Thanks

OK...I have always loved this type of shot and saw this and decided totry, where the target in focus is only a piece of the actual target, the rest is slightly outta focus in the background... in this targetobviously the suckers and the bottle are main and the octo in thebackground. What do you think? Does it work? is it too tightlycropped? Anything else?

Gorgeous portrait pose... a little over exposed in my eyes tho. and it almost seems a touch out of focus, (could be my eyes tho I've been staring at a computer screen for 4 hrs doing a paper) What lens/camera was used to shoot this? tripod? flash?

edit: Oh and how much was this shot cropped?

Hi.. i feel blaring comments of praise don't help anyone learn so let me get this out of the way first...it is a very nice shot. But what id like to see which would make it a fantastic shot....

The shot looks a little washed, it could maybe come from the amount of sunlight on the lashes...or just from being a touch over exposed.

Also what is reflecting in the horses eye? Is it intentionally in the shot? Since I cant tell what it is it makes it a little distracting. I KNOW that animals don't do what you want them to when shooting, but if it was possible to get him to turn his head slightly so as you would not get that reflection and you could see more clearly the coloration and texture of the eye that would be 10/10.

But those 2 hyper-critical critiques aside... I love the attempt...eye photography is something i really do love.

I'm completely unsure of this shot. I like all the coiled tentaclesreaching out across the frame but I'm really not happy with the depthof field, what do you think? more depth or is it alright? Also howsthe color i think its a little washed personally but wasn't able to doanything else without saturating the heck outta it.

  2. Ok this situation was a complete surprise I was out at night shootingand came across this little guy hunting. I didn't know I waswitnessing a hunt until he'd already snapped up his prey, a poorlittle puffer.

Once he snapped it up i started firing away what do you think? I knowmost of the time the sharpest focus is preferred on the eye but in asituation like this would it be better on the food? And hows the cropjob?

Ioannis Long time no talk, How is everything?

This is an interesting shot, and a more interesting idea. I dont know if u planned this shot before you took it, or shot it then looked at what you got.

I'm kinda torn, I like the sun in the shot, and couldn't see the shot without it, but its sooo bright that it distracts me from the birds. But that aside. Its a great shot I love the tranquility of the ocean with just the "dancers" movement evident.

Question between the 4th-5th birds in the very back there appears to be smoke? what is that? antoher boat? a village?

Thanks for the comments. Sorry this is so late in coming. I didnt see the question the first time i looked at the comments.

MichaelThey are Flamingo Tongues. They a marine gastropod, kinda related to a snail, underwater of course. They are always found on these soft corals in the Caribbean.

I'm not sure if this shot had too much flash? Should I have dialeddown the flash a bit? Other then the flash any suggestions ... good orbad? lemme know. Thanks

I love the concept. Deserted places are alwasy so interesting. I dont think im a huge fan of the angle tho. I think I would like to see the shot from a little lower.. shooting more across the desk.. not on top of it. But thats just my 2 cents :) other then that, BW, Exposure, etc all great.

I have a tendancey for loving shots like this with the urchinpartially cropped off. Do you think it would be better with the rest othe urchin in the shot or do you like it like this?

    -Mike

  3. I know this isnt technically a reflection but every time i look atthis picture the fish in the background reminds me of a reflection.what do you think? Also the coloring? I would have changed the WB backto Auto and it would have come out regular colored but I think theimage lost ALOT when I tried that? Is it just the color that makesthis pic? Is the pic even made or am I just losing it? lol

    -Mike

  4. Ive noticed that with this Lens then Nikkor 60mm that when u come inreally close it has a very narrow DOF, and Ive always seen that as adrawback. But in this situation I think it may have worked for me.What do you think? Too much out of focus? Too few in?

    -Mike

  5. I posted this picture a while ago but now looking back at it Imwondering first what other people think? Should this image includemore of the Dragonfly's body? Also is there a way I can get around theDOF o the 60mm micro-nikkor I'm using? Is the DOF just a product of mydistance from the target here? Thanks

Thank you all for your comments and for receiving this little guy so well. When I saw him sitting on the soft coral I knew if i could get into position without him moving it would be a nice shot, I just didn't know so many others would agree. Thanks again
