This shot is very basic/bland in composition in my eyes but its a shotof a very small critter, so I was wondering is there any way to shoota little guy like this more effectively in the wild? Thanks

Hi Michael,

This is a very nice shot, i like the textures and the posing of the critter. The subject is a bit too close to smack center but in U/W photography you dont always have time and leisure to compose perfectly. The difficulty with this shot is that the subject needs to be separated from the background to make it pop out. If you have a separate strobe (as opposed to the in-camera flash) you may try a different light angle (more dramatic side lighting or backlighting for instance may have been more effective to separate your subject from the background). Failing that you can adjust this in post processing with a few clicks (see attached i have used level adjustement to darken the background a little, then i applied a slight vignette, and some sharpening to make your subject pop out a bit more). Overall i think it's a fine shot. Regards - michel

I do have separate strobes, I use 2x Ikelite DS-125 substrobes, for macro i always keep the defusers on them.but...ummm i would love to change the light angle but this critter is only 1 1/4in long....i don't really have a ton of movement room on that hehe...Thnx though I appreciate the tidbit about the post process
