1. It doesn't look to me as a refurbished product. Recently I bought a refurb D300s+16-85 (as a kit) for aprox 600$. Both, camera and lens was in mint condition, like new , and shutter count was zero. Both items in original packing , with refurbished warranty, 1 year. Maybe Nikon USA apply different standards (than Europe) to their refurb. products !? :) ...Oh...,and no dents at all (beside serial no)
 2. Over 40K and no oil spots/no cleaning required.

 9.
Below you can see my setup ..., obviously I can't remove the foot due to the way I use it. Just like Ilkka mentioned , each photographer will decide how to use(or not) this new lens.
BTW Shun , now that you post the above picture I realized also my 200-500 have a front zoom ring :-)..., the funny thing is : I don't remember how I hold this lens...

 10.
The prices , here in EU , are enormous , 30% higher than USA ones..., but I welcome the change of the zoom ring to the front of the lens. If the tripod foot is used as a resting point on the palm of your left hand (as I always did) , the forward position of the ring is much more comfortable now. On the previous models I have to flex back the wrist ( while using the foot as a resting point), that being slightly uncomfortable. Touching the focus ring may be a problem for those who use the lens with tripod collar removed.

 17.
Last weekend I chose to travel (with my wife) to historical town of Herculane . Legend has it that the weary Hercules stopped in the valley to bathe and rest. Unearthed stone carvings show that visiting Roman aristocrats turned the town into a Roman leisure center. From year 1800 this town was the jewel of Europe of thermal bath resorts. Unfortunately, now, most of the buildings are in the advanced degradation status...

 19.
Last year I decided to sell my 300 AF-I. I din't use'it to often... It was in mint condition almost like new. Wonderful optics - in fact, it is the only Nikon 300mm made with 4 ED glass. On D3 focus was quite fast but not as fast as 70-200/2,8 VRII, and a little bit noisy. Wonderful construction with crinkle finish paint.
