  1. I use a 100-400L IS and find it tack sharp at 350mm. Going upto to 400 it does drop a bit but still very good. I think this is true for most zooms - they have the sweetest point just below the max and minimum positions. The IS is really useful for wildlife and especially birds because handholding is often the only feasible option. The image sample below was taken hand held of a moving boat at 350mm.

I have heard that the 400prime is sharper.<div>00J4TI-33872184.jpg.81e9481f681c0bd7e8d6b06f6aef77cb.jpg</div>

  2. I belive all Fuji frontier prints have a text computer code at the back which read something like this:- (quoted from http://tartamillo.altervista.org/foto/frontier.eng.php)

    <001.TIF> A02475-001 0001 2NNC 1

The interesting thing is the "2NNC" sequence, showing the corrections made by the operator. The characters indicate respectively Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Density corrections. If you see an "N" then nothing has been touched, a number means a positive correction, a letter other than "N" a negative correction. Here they pressed 2 times the button that adds cyan and 3 times the one that lowers density. Now you know the reason of the cast and the lost of detail.

What you really want when printing from file is "NNNN", any other string means that you are not in control. On the contrary, if you print from film some degree of correction is most likely desirable.

Please note that different versions of the Frontier will use this convention only for the CMY stuff, and density has a separate number, but the system is the same. If in doubt ask the lab. If they are not able to answer you then it's Fate telling you that you should change lab.
