  1. Hi I have been pondering a similar purpose lens for my 30D, current have a Tamaron 28-75 which is great, but really miss my old 50 x 1.4f which I had on my old screw mount Pentax film camera. That was (is) one great lens, and even thought about getting a cheap adapter for my canon.

Anyways, all this said, I really feel a 35mm x f1.4 may be better with the 1.6x crop, it is a classy lens, but quite a bit more pricey too.

  2. Hi Patrick,

This is a useful tool for school indeed and a wonderful gesture. I would advise you to bring it from Europe rather than buy in Sri Lanka.

I am currently Director of Community Services at the Rotary Club of Colombo, the 2nd oldest Rotary Club in Asia founded in 1929, and we have a strong record of service especially after the Tsunami. Schools in Sri Lanka has been a specially strong area of focus for Rotary, please have a look at http://rotary-srilanka.org/index.html

  3. Use spot focus mode, press button half way down and focus the spot you want, holdig button half way down move camera and recompose frame as you want it to be, then press button fully to take shot.

Simple! I do it all the time with wildlife to get focus on eyes etc.

  4. I debated the two lenses and decided on the much cheaper Tamaron 28-75. My brother in law has the Canon 28-70L. Having closely compared the two, the Tamaron is virtually as good except when fully wide open. At f4 and above the Tamaron is superb. Unless you want fully uncompromising quality the Tamaron is very good and much much cheaper.

This link gives a test comparison of the two lenses

  5. I think there are a lot of internet/computer whiz kids/junkies who get a perverse pleasure from messing up other poeples websites and computers etc with computer viruses etc, These scripts are not very different, just some kid usually getting high by trying to show the world how smart he is by cracking passwords etc. Some of them actually do more serious crime, electronic crimes though like credit card frauds and stuff.
  6. Hi Karko,

No this is not directly possible.

Although there are some 3rd party optical triggers etc available on the market I would be very cautious as these can have voltage differences etc that can cause serious camera damage.

You have a great camera and a great flash in the 30D and 580EX, best is to use a simple chord extension which will give you the full ETTL features. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/498744-REG/Canon_1950B001_OC_E3_Off_Camera_Shoe.html

  7. Manfrotto 3021 PROB is probably best value for money, is solid and works for me with a Canon 100-400L. Quite nifty in that it also allows the center column to be mounted transverse position which is useful in macro stuff. Not sure about your kit and lenses though. It is too heavy for me to take around long trekking etc.

Gitzo also make some great stuff but is pricier too.

  8. Very sorry to learn about your dilemma Yuan. I fully agree that seller must confirm receipt of payment before shipping out but cannot agree with your sugesstion "never send out of US" - that is daft! Using UPS/FEDEX/DHL for higher value shipemnst does make sense.

I live in Sri Lanka and do buy items from the US regularly over the internet, mostly from well established vendors like amazon and BH and also some smaller companies wit good reputations, mosty payment is made online by credit card on a secure web site and I have never had any problem.

If you ship out goods to a stranger across half way across the planet witout confirming receipt of payment that is just daft and the suggestion to never ship out of the US is even more daft!

  9. I have been using a 30D for wildlife and general travel etc and very happy with it. 40D is a better camera than the 30D however even though I could upgrade easily I have no plans to do so. If budget is a concern for you go with the 30D its great.

  10. I use a Canon 10-22 and also a Tamaron 28-75 both super lenses but agree with Robin's concept of a "inconvenient crossover point". maybe a 17-55 will be much more practical and cover most indoor crowds, parties, wedding etc situations better and then you use a longer lens for the zoom stuff.
  11. Hi

A lot would depend on the country this is relevant to. e.g. There are so may women entrepreneurs today in Soutern and Eastern Asia, doing quite well too running businesses, spas, restaurants, small hotels/guest houses etc. The ME, Pakistan etc is another story, while in some places, especially Thailand etc women are badly exploited for sex indutries.
