2.
There are two different, current, 55-250 zoom lenses in Canon EF-S mount:
- Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II; and
- EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM
They are about the same price. The STM version has the advantage over the Version II in that the STM version has a non-rotating front element and it has the newer (STM) focus motor.

Here are the reviews from photozone:
Version II
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5.6-IS-II-Lens-Review.aspx
STM Version
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5.6-IS-STM-Lens.aspx
Here is the Photozone review of the Tamron:
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/592-tamron70300f456vceosapsc
Cheers! 9.
This "Mirrorless Monday", 04 Aug, 2014, is a very important Canadian anniversary. 100 years ago today, Canada entered World War One.
In 1914, the population of Canada was just over seven million people. We sent over 620,000 of those Canadians to fight in Europe. By the time the war ended in 1918, 67,000 Canadians were killed and 250,000 were wounded.

The last soldier to die in "The War To End All Wars" was a Canadian, from Nova Scotia, who was killed just two minutes before the armistice came into effect.

In spite of these horrific statistics, World War One was a "Coming of Age" event for Canada. For the first time in our history, we fought as independent Canadian units, under the command of Canadian Generals. This war was a main impetus that sped Canadians towards our independence from Great Britain. It also saw the rift between English and French Canada deepen and widen.

Canadians distinguished themselves in all the major World War One battles including:

Neuve Chapelle;
Second Battle of Ypres;
Battle of the Somme;
Battle of Vimy Ridge;
Battle of Pachendaele; and
Hundred Days Offensive.

Seventy-one Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross (the British Empire and Commonwealth highest award for valour) in the First World War.

Cheers! 18.
There has probably never been a better time to get into IR photography.

Conversion of digital cameras to IR-only (changing the sensor filtre stack) is inexpensive. Mirrorless cameras have eliminated the focus shift problem. Lens filtres are not required. One can shoot hand-held (just like a visible light camera) for most IR conversions...and...computer software makes processing/printing images easy.

Cheers! 19.
Thanks Patrick! I'll have to try that today.

I wonder if it is the same for other "live view AF" cameras: like the T4I/T5I/70D? I would guess that it should work on those bodies as well.

<edit> Looks like Rob and I posted at the same time.

Cheers! Jay

 20.
Two images shot from the same position with the same lens ~ one with a 40D in visible light and one with an EOS M converted to IR only. Lens was the EF-S 10-22. Shot in fairly heavy fog (visibility less than 200 meters). This is the oldest high schools in our town. It opened in 1852.

Cheers!
