  1. The magnification filters (500D, 250D) yield good results. Technically, whenever you put another element in front of the lens, you lose some quality. But overall, I hear people are very happy with them.

The extension tubes as mentioned also work well. You don't need to buy Canon... Kenko sells a much cheaper set and since there are no lens elements involved... all quality is the same. Just make sure you get the version that Autofocuses.

Remember, if you use extension tubes... you loose focus at infinity. It will be a lot of moving your tripod back and forth trying to get into the right spot.

  2. Hmm... no one has answered your question :)

What do you want to do? Wedding videography, sports video or movies?

Afterdawn.com is a good place to get technical answers about file formats etc. and hardware problems. For reviews and discussions... check out http://www.dv.com/

As for translating your photography skills... that will translate already as far as framing, composition and lighting. Also your knowledge or lenses, focal lengths, DOF etc. All directly translates.

What I think is more important is learning how to edit. Getting the coverage is one thing, piecing it together to tell a story is the key that will make your videos different from regular home videos. For that, read the gold standard in introduction to film editing: Walter Murch's In a Blink of an Eye... http://www.amazon.com/Blink-Eye-Revised-2nd/dp/1879505622/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199562238&sr=8-1

    Good luck!

  3. The question is do you loose quality with a lenses with such a high zoom variation. The answer is yes. Look at any MTF charts and compare with primes.

If the question is if the lens is usable and can yield good results. That answer is also yes... depending on what your standards are.

Ask a general question... get a general answer.

  4. Looking at the EXIF from your picture... would you consider a 24-70 f2/.8 or a 28-70 f/2.8? You are shooting at f/2.2 anyway. Your 40D might also be able to handle a little higher ISO up to even ISO2000.

I think the 50 f/1.4 will help a bit but the AF on that is not THAT great either. It is by far better than f/1.8 but not as nice as the ring USM found in the 24/28-70 f/2.8.

  5. I would say that eBay is the grand equalizer for selling used gear. It's the biggest market you are going to have access to and therefore giving you the biggest chance for finding a market with higher demand.

For a seller, it is less (not impossible) likely to get scammed. Since they have to send you the money first. Just wait till it COMPLETELY clears. Shipping is a pain but it is standard for the buyer to pay shipping fees. For all the negatives that eBay/Paypal accrues, I actually feel that they are one of the most ingenious uses for the Internet.

I looked into selling equipment to Adorama, KEH and B&H a few years ago. Their prices weren't anywhere close to what you can get selling yourself. Look at their used prices... that price needs to be a profit on top of what they paid for it.

  6. KEH will buy back your gear. But you'll get more from eBay or Fredmiranda.com has a really active buy and sell board. So does photography-on-the.net. You can also try locally with Craigslist. All will probably yield more than KEH.
  7. If sharpness is your most important factor, get the 16-35mmII. It is better than the 17-40. The 17-40 is maybe marginally better than the 16-35mmI but I feel they were more close than different.

f/2.8 will make a difference indoors... you'll probably be pushing your ISO a bit as well. If your work depended on it, I would go with f/2.8 instead of f/4 just so you have that option when needed.

If you ALWAYS use lights or a strobe, than you can probably get away with an f/4. The f/4 is a perfect lens for landscapes and the extra 5mm comes in handy as a general purpose lens for crop bodies. Is this what you are trying to do?

Edge to edge sharpness is going to depend on if you are using a crop body.

  8. It is absolutely worth $650. Very worst... you can sell it on the used market for at least $800.

It is sharp at 24mm. Great range. IS works well. The 24-105 and the 24-70 are probably the best mid-range zooms IQ wise you can buy from Canon.

Is it the right lens for you? Depends on what your needs are and what you shoot. I sold my 24-105IS for a 24-70 b/c I preferred the larger aperture.

  9. The 24-70 f/2.8 Ken recommends is a great lens but it might be a bit long on a crop body. People have been talking favorably about the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. You can always sell it if you upgrade.

    I would get a 17-40 f/4, 50 f/1.4 and 70-200 f/4 IS or non-IS depending on budget.

Everyone's going to recommend the 50 f/1.8 because it is only $70. I would and did pay the extra for the 1.4... it is $200 better... probably $70 in image quality and $130 in handling. I actually went to the 1.2 but got rid of it and went back to the 1.4 (50mm's).

But the best advice is to look at what your needs and preferences were from the AE-1 and evaluate yourself. Putting together a lens kit is a process... and you'll definitely be through lenses... ones you buy and ones you sell.

  10. Probably supply and demand... maybe you'll hit a time when people are looking for the 10D and there aren't many up there but it is impossible to fortell with the eBay market.

Regardless, I doubt the difference in one time of year as opposed to another would net in more than $50 or so. Waiting will probably only drive the prices down as the 30D and 20D prices drop.

  11. I am sure you looked here too: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/US1Camera

Although they seem to "check out", some of the reviews make me a bit nervous. Adorama has it for $200 more... maybe piece $200 of piece of mind.

Although not indicated on the web site, the item arrived not in retail packaging, but in OEM packaging without a user manual. Email to the company regarding this has gone unanswered. Warrenty card was included as stated, the item appears new and works perfectly.

I order a Canon 40D body only with a 1 year USA warranty. Order# AOM-1961442614. When I got the camera the warranty card was missing. I called them and they responded with a free three year extended warranty. That is called good service. Thank You.

This is funny, I sent them an email after my lens came but there was no response to my email. I did however, get an email sending me to this link to take a survey so here I am. My email told them that I was unhappy that my "new" lens did not come with a user manual of any sort. The lens packaging did not look like what it would come in if I bought it directly from Canon. Also, I ordered the camera and by the time I got it in the mail 9 days later, the price went down $20 so I asked if I could please be refunded that amount. No response to that either. I probably will not order from us1photo again.

  12. I scanned over 200 images myself... what a PAIN IN THE REAR! Dust... waiting for the scanner... it wasn't a fun process. If there is any way for you to afford it... I'd say have someone else do it.

I just saw this... I am no affliated with them in any way... I posted their link on another thread... but I am dying to try them myself. At these prices... seems worth it to try a few images and see if you are happy.
