1.
I shot my first set of Raw files on my new D500. But I can't open them in either PSE8 or DxO 10. Both programs say the files are an"unknown format" or "corrupted." They opened with no problem in ViewNx Jpeg files from the D500 open fine in all programs. What am I doing wrong?

  2.
I was in Cat Tien in early March this year. There are lots of birds but seeing them is another story. They tended to be hidden a lot and very far off. I was using a 200-400mm with a 1.4x most of the time and in a lot of cases if you could find the bird it only filled the central focusing square in my D300.
You can see what I took at Look at bird nos. 30 and up in the Vietnam album. Some of them were taken in the Mekong near HCM city.

What are the names of these monkeys?
Photos were taken in Vietnam'.
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/monkey2_zpsrg4gh2bj.jpg.html?sort=3&o=5
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/monkey1_zpsubpyjyyz.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4

  5.
Can anyone tell me what the names of these are? They were photographed in Vietnam, in the area around Hanoi in early March.

http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/butterfly%202_zpsra7ddxzb.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/butterfly%201_zpsazksmjum.jpg.html?sort=3&o=5
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/butterfly3_zpsc5omninv.jpg.html?sort=3&o=6
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/moth2_zpscirct7ig.jpg.html?sort=3&o=7
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/Moth%201_zpsr9c2vggl.jpg.html?sort=3&o=8
http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/dms1954x/media/buterfly4_zpskoscsvsz.jpg.html?sort=3&o=8

    600mm F4

I am considering a used 600 mm AF f4 but am getting "letter confusion" with all the different variations on the auction site. eg. f4G SWM VRII N M/A ED, AF-S f4 G ED WR AFS, f4 D Ed IF AF-S.
Is there any chart that shows the progression of the lens variations since it was first offered for sale ? And ho wsignifict are the differences between the models.
Also how do the MF models of the f4 compare optically to a AF model.
I would ultimately be using it on a D500

  7.
I notice that the program only has the VRII version in its menu for the Nikon 18-200mm and 200-400mm lenses. But I have the VRI versions. Will the program work with my lens?

And when are they going to add Nikon TCs to the options? I can't be the only person who uses a TC with his long lens?

  8.
I am going to borrow my friend's D7200 body for our Vietnam trip. Photos will be scenic, birds and nature. What "Picture Control" setting do people usually use? standard, flat, or? I will do some post processing with Dx0 and Photoshop elements.

  9.
I will in the near future upgrade my D300. When the D500 was announced that was what I was going get. But I can get a low count used D810 for less then the D500 will cost new. I shoot mainly birds and nature. I have a 200-400mm Nikon and an old Nikon 55MM 2.8 macro. My 18-200mm Vr1 will be terrible on either so that will be upgraded eventually.
Suggestions ?

  10.
I have some ideas of the areas I want to visit and have looked at that website Ian mentions. . Was only able to contact one guide from it who charges almost as much as a safari in Africa. I thought people on this site in their travels might know of some guides there. I am flexible on where in Thailand I go.

  11.
My friend and I want to do a birding photo trip in the interior of Thailand in March. Does anyone know any local guides or companies there?

  12.
I think I have figured out what DxO does. It isn't huge improvement but I can see the changes. Now for my next ignorant questions. How do you batch process your photos instead of one by one? And once you have altered them in DxO can you save them as RAW files and then then use PSE on them?

  13.
David
How do I send you a RAW file? I tried uploading one to Photobucket so i could send the URL but no success.

  14.
I took a few of my problematic RAW files and used them in DxO . I saw no difference between the original file and the "corrected" one. I am using a Nikon D300 and Nikon 200-400MM

  15.
I received an email from DxO about a 1/2 off sale. I just use PE8 for my photos and telling it my camera my camera and lens. I don't see any difference in the before and after shots. What exactly is the program supposed to do?

  16.
I was in Tanzania a year ago January with a Nikon 200-400mm and a D300. You can see my bird photos at https://www.flickr.com/photos/121910895@N06/ in the Tanzania birds album. Most of those have been cropped considerably. I wished I had something longer most of the time even when I used my 1.4x on it.

  17.
Her Pentax is about 10 years old and I thought she should get some more modern technology and better images as well as video. She has a Pentax 18-55mm and a 55-300 so one lens would be easier to handle. On our trip to Tanzania a couple of years ago , she was flustered with changing lens.
How will the limitations of the 18-200 show on 24 MP? I know it is soft but it gives me acceptable images on my D300 on the few occasions I use it. As for what she will do with her photos I doubt if she will do any enlargements larger than 8 x10.

  18.
I am looking for a camera for my lady friend for her trip to the Far East. It is time for her to upgrade from her Pentak K100 digital. A 7200 is overkill for her so I am looking at a used D5300 or D5200. I don't see much a difference between them other than some video capability.. She will be using my Nikon 18-200mm VR (the first version) . What are the differences between them?

    Peru

I am looking into a birding expedition to Peru which will include a couple of days in Cusco and Machu Picchu and then the Pacaya Samiria nature reserve . A few years back there were some message threads about Peru not letting people in with more than one camera and lens unless they paid some a large deposit. Is this still happening?
Anyone been to the nature reserve?
Any pointers or suggestions about equipment, what to take and not to take ? I have a D300, a macro lens, an 18-200mm (though thinking of getting a better quality 18-70 or so to replace it), a 200-400mm with 1.4x, monopod and SB800. My feeling is that my Benbo tripod and the Manfrotto 393 are too bulky and heavy for what we will be doing.

  20.
Where on the D300 is the AF fine tuning section? There is no reference to it in the manual

  21.
I have a wedding in Palm Springs on Jan. 10. I don't know the area at all but would like to extend the trip by a few days. I am into nature and bird photography. Any suggestions as to where to go within a 5 hr. drive or so?

  22.
Can anyone tell me the process that Adormapix uses to make acrylic prints. They have not answered my emails to them about it. Is it like a dye infusion process into the acrylic. Or do they just put a piece of acrylic over a standard print?
Also the file I want to send them is too big as a Tiff. If I use a jpg with 300 DPI it will be a much smaller file but will it be the same quality as the Tiff ? The print I want to do will be about 8" x30"
