  1. A mandarin duck in Burnaby, BC, N one knows how it got here. The theory is it escaped from someone's hobby pond. The poor thing though is smitten with female wood duck, following it around and chasing off other ducks
  2. I have an old Benbo tripod which I have been using for my old 600 mm, f4 Nikon , D500 and the u-shaped Manfrotto tripod head. The lens, body and head together are pushing 20 lb. The tripod is about 8 lb. and is bulky. If we ever travel again I want a lighter tripod that can handle the weight and is more compact. I am fine with old used Carbon fibre ones as the new ones are probably too expensive. Any suggestions as to what would do the job?.
  3. I was out looking for birds with my 600mm. No birds but this co-operative butterfly.
  4. Some how the battery compartment cover on my D500 has gone missing. I have sent an email to Nikon Canada asking if they have one and how much, but fear that if they do it will cost a fortune. Anyone know where I can find one ? There are several advertised on ebay but most are form China and the pictures don't match the actual cover.
  5. Has anyone had any experience with the Helicon FB tube ? It sounds intriguing.
  6. Has anyone had any experience buying a used lens from the Japanese photo store sellers on ebay and importing it into Canada? Any idea of the duties and taxes? Some their prices for the big primes are really good even if there are duties and taxes to import them.

  8. Can you solar charge a Nikon D500 battery? I am going to be in a lodge in the Amazon for a few days and I do not think it has reliable electricity. Anyone know of any portable solar panels/chargers that can do the job?
  9. I was photographing this owl on the weekend with my D500 and my 600mm f4. The "Horned-1" shot 's colors are what I saw, a tawny colored owl. I moved over to the left about 5 feet to get a different angle and took the "horned-2_ shot. The color of the owl is almost grey as opposed to tawny. The exposure was not that different. But why the substantial color difference? After the "grey" shot i took some fall foliage and the colors were fine.
  10. The internal memory on this camera is only 55MB. How big are photos shot in Raw ? How much memory would a 10 second video take? I am thinking of getting this camera to use while snorkeling in the Galagapos and need to know how big a memory card I should get.
  11. Any suggestions for a good quality 4 way focus rail to hold a D500 , 55mm macro and PK-14 extension tube?
  12. When I went to Vietnam 2 years ago I used my friend's D7200 with my Nikon 200-400mm as it had better resolution and low light capabilities than my D300. But I never liked the way the D7200 felt. By my next trip last year to India , my D300 was replaced by my new D500. It felt so much better than the D7200 in my hands and was easier to use. Yes it was about twice the price but unless there is quantum leap in technology, or I win a lottery and can afford a D5, the D500 will probably be my last body.
  13. My 2 budgies are shedding feathers like crazy . The colour variation in such a small feather is neat and I want to take some macros with my Nikon 55Mm macro and the PK-13 extension tube. The feathers are about 1/4-1/2 inch in width and height. Any suggestion as to how to place them and light them? I have an SB800 and a SB 24 I could use.
