    it seems easy for an image like this to seem cliche, i know that when i was in high-school the first image i took for a DOF assignment the first thing i grabbed was my guitar, but this is pretty well done. I kind of wish the lighting was reversed though, in that most, or more direct light, was placed on his hand and it faded out as your eye moves right - but perhaps with a bit of catchlight on the left hand. Either way, well done.

    Well this is what makes photography fun. I feel that by having the horse on the left you realize the main subject, but then by the aforementioned cultural left-right, your eye looks to the right but is then brought back to the subject. It takes a little onus off the subject to explore the landscape. I think that on the inverse your eye may get "stuck" on the subject. respectfully,dan.

    i disagree, Stephen. First off having the horse to the right of the frame, while looking to the left, i think would be awkward in itself. You tend to read a picture from left to right - unless you're main language is Hebrew i suppose. Anyway, having the horse to the left, half looking back, is as if to say "i dont know where im going, neither do you...are you coming?". The "leading into the frame" mantra is tried and true and i've utilized it often myself - but i've also broken it, and, IMHO, made those particular pictures better. The current composition also blends together in so many ways. The light play on the ground, and the way the horse's profile "nests" in with the treeline in the background. Just trying to imagine it the other way around, i just feel like it would have negative space, whereas here it feels the space is being used more effectively. Perhaps having the horse to the left removes it as the main point in the photo (since we're "reading" it left to right) allowing the landscape to have a little more prominence. The bit of lens flare "works" here and is very nearly on the 2/3 line in the frame. Lens flare makes sense here - i expect to see it in this photo - not seeing it would suggest manipulation and make it, to my eye, sterile.

     

    curious as to whats going on - on the right hand side of the frame by the treeline? clouds? or some sort of blurring to hide something?...

    VASI looks happy enough - three white and one red, this is a pretty long runway and this was from a short approach (check the other picture in this folder) so we're still dropping down pretty quick (VSI agrees with my memory too!). At the present time i wasnt flying, no, but i've done my share of right handed approaches - its too hard and is good practice anyway - puts more of an onus on feeling the plane's speed instead of looking at the KIAS.

    beautiful, "moody", photo. Perfectly times to his cast, and relatively good post processing, though you did go pretty heavy with it. i would back off on the vignetting, or correct it just a touch if it was natural. Great composition and feeling in this image.

    something is up with the interpolation on this, it looks soft and OOF, but digitally rather than optically. what post processing did you do to this? i think you might have over done it. It looked better in the thumbnail!

     

    anyways, what attracted me to the photo was the composition,strong diagonals, and relatively complimentary colors. You need to figure out whats up with the softness though, it kills what i think would otherwise be a fine photo.

  1. yeah, but it looks like we still had some altitude to lose and it looks like we're inside 2minute/turn (cant see the degrees on the att. even in the full res, too much glare on both).ITs hard shot to pull off in any case, ISO 6400, in a bumpy airplane, and right at the minimum focusing distance...
