Doug,
I absolutely love your website! It still amazes me at the many different people that you have the priviledge to communicate with on this forum. Thanks for taking the time.

Douglas,
I just uploaded a picture of the lens, from ebay. I can't seem to tell where the rubber ring is located. Can you take a look? Also, have you heard how this lens performs on the 5D? Thanks for your help.

Someone on ebay bought an R8 in 2003 and never used it. He sold the body and lens separate. If I can't use it, I should'nt have a hard time selling it. The lens is prestine, in box with papers, and has ROM contacts. Regards, Terry

Steve,
Thank you very much. Your list pretty much confirms what I have read. How would you compare the two 28s? I can't find many opinions on the f/2. I guess I just like the idea that it is made in Germany. How does the IQ compare?
Also, for no particular reason, I chose the Summilux 50 1.4 E over the Planar 50 1.4. I won't get it until Wednesday, but heard that the new version interferes with the mirror, where the last version didn't. Do you know anything about this?
Again, thanks.

Hello,
I just bought this lens for my 5D and heard that it would have mirror
clearance problems. The last version didn't, therefore didn't show up on the
charts or lists I reviewed before buying it. I get the lens on Wednesday, and
have not bought an adapter yet. Thank you for your help.

Samir,
I think the 28 2.8 Elmarit, and Distagon 28 will work fine. There is a Zeiss 21 that doesn't, because the mirror hits.

Steve,
Your pictures are beautiful. What adapter do you use? Also, why Summicron over Summilux? I have had several people say that, but I have also read comments that the Summilux was amazing, and the best 50mm available.
I can appreciate the comments about staying with Canon lenses. Currently, I own the 24-70 2.8L, 85 1.2L II, 135 2L, and 200 2.8L. Regardless of an alternative lens, I still plan to get the 35 1.4L. I had hoped the reviews on the 50 1.2L were like the 85 1.2L, but there are a lot of undecided users.
For now, I just want to play around with mf German glass on my 5D. My background is medium format manual cameras, and manual focus and exposure means nothing to me. My photography is very deliberate, many times on a tripod. If I want to chase one of my four children around for snapshots or school functions, I grab my 24-70 or 135.
I would still appreciate any comments on Leica verses Zeiss. I have had many recommend the Planar 50 1.4, and Distagon 28 2.8. Any opinions on these two?

Terry

Hello,
I want to get a wide (24-35) and normal prime for my 5D. The main use will be
portraits and landscape. After reading many reviews, it seems like the
following may be good choices: Summilux 50, Summicron 50, Planar 50 1.4,
Distagon 28 2.8, and Distagon 35 1.4. Could I get your opinion on this? Do
you have any other suggestions. I guess I am like many other and looking for
the ultimate normal lens.
Thank you,

Thank you guys.
Ott, I am still learning, but from what I am told, it's not only the cropped sensor, but also pixel density. I am off from work for a while due to a heart attack, and am spending a lot of time with my camera. I love the Nikon 600 5.6, and it works out very well with my 5D. There is a lot of wildlife and mallards in my neighborhood, but I still can't fill the frame. Supposedly, thats where density comes into play, allowing me to crop and maintain detail. I have been told the same thing, over and over, from several nature and wildlife forums.
Mark, I am not opposed to getting a Nikon body, at all. I love Nikon. I used to use a Fuji S2 with Nikon lenses, and loved it. The advantage to another Canon body is that I can use my existing L lenses. I have a 200 2.8 and would probably get the 400 5.6. Along with my Nikon 600, that would be a good range of focal lengths without spending thousands $. My main interest is portraits and family photos, and I built my lens kit around full frame. There are many Canon folks using and recommending the 30D, I thought it must be a good choice. I'm really not brand loyal, it just seems to make more sense to have a Canon second body.
All of your opinions are appreciated.

Hello,
I usually use my 5D and L primes for portraits and family photos. Recently, I
have gotten interested in wildlife photography, and purchased a Nikon 600mm
5.6 and TC14-B as an entry into long telephotos. I was hoping this would give
me the reach I needed for a full frame camera. Well, I still have to crop,
and the lack of pixel density becomes a problem.
What would be a good high pixel density, cropped sensor, body for wildlife. I
am considering the 30D, and wanted your opinion or suggestions.
Thank you,
Terry

Hello All,
I just wanted to follow up now that I have my lens and have tested it. Love it! Sharp as a tack, even with the TC14-B. Easy to focus, too. The stock screen is no problem, just like focusing my ealier medium format cameras. I worried way to much about this. Thanks for your replies.

Thank you all very much. I guess I'll find out which way to go on Monday, when the lens arrives. I believe a lot of the screen options would work better with the 500 f4. The whole thing is just an enjoyable learning experience. There were 18 other bidders on the lens I bought, so if I need to sell it, it won't be a problem. I also bought a TC-14B for $139, so that should'nt be hard to sell, either. My next effort might be the 30D body and 400 5.6L.

Terry

Mark,
I certainly do plan to try, and am looking forward to it. Your pictures are beautiful, thanks for sharing.
Jim,
Thanks for the link. They don't have the 5D listed for that particular screen, but it looks like just what I need. I plan to call them tomorrow.
Thanks guys,

Hello,
Has anyone ever tried focusing a manual focus lens at 5.6 or 8 on a 5D? After
buying a Nikon 600 5.6, I am learning that there aren't any options for a
better focusing screen. The Ee-S gets too dark, and split images black out.
I used to shoot medium format, and always relied on split image screens in
order to focus. I have read other posts that claimed focusing a slow lens on
a digital camera is hit or miss. I won't get the lens until Monday, but
already thinking that I will be selling it on ebay. It is in mint condition,
the latest version, and I was really looking forward to my backyard wildlife
fun. I just don't have the budget for a 500-600 L lens. I would appreciate
hearing about your experiences.

Terry

Carlos,
Maybe you can help me. I just bought a Nikon 600 5.6 on ebay. Is it going to be possible to focus? I sounds like the EE-S screen will be too dark at 5.6. Do you have any experience focusing at 5.6 on your 5D? Getting this lens for my 5D was just an attempt to use a long lens on my 5d for backyard wildlife, without spending the money for an AF L lens. I have the 24-70, 85 1.2, 135 2, and 200 2.8 for portraits, but can't justify thousands of dollars for the squirells, birds, and ducks in my yard.
Thanks,
Terry

Thank you all. I do believe that a Gitzo CF tripod with an appropriate head would be a better investment. I have a budget of $800.00 and could use your suggestions. I would rather have something heavier than needed for the 600 5.6, since I will eventually get something faster and heavier. Terry

Emily, I am using a Nikon to EOS lens adapter. I did a lot of research on this first, and it seems that many people do this as an enrty into long telephotos. I chose a Nikon manual focus over a lesser quality auto focus lens. The choices are very limited in the 500-600mm range without spending thousands of dollars. Regards, Terry

Hello,
I am just starting to try wildlife photography and purchased a Nikon 600 f/5.4
to mount on my 5D. I have a nice tripod, but also want a monopod. I can't
decide between the Gitzo 1564 aluminum, 1568 and 3550 carbon fiber models. My
first concern is the maximum height. I am 6'2" and the 3550 is about 72".
The other two are 62"-65". My first choice is the 1568 because it looks fat
and sturdy with four sections. The 3550 has five sections and looks thinner.
They have weight capacities of 26 lbs. and 39 lbs. Your opinions on how to
make this choice would be appreciated.
Also, should I get a ballhead or quick disconnect for a monopod? I saw a
swivel and quick disconnect at Kirk Enterprises mounted on the 1568 that
looked nice.
Thank you,
Terry

Thank you all, so much. Greg, beautiful pictures, I am inspired and anxious to receive my 600 5.6. What lens adapter do you suggest using? I thought about the Novoflex from Adoroma, since I can get it fast. They also have a generic model. I just want a good one since I will probably get another Nikon lens if this works out. Terry

Thank you Dr. Mark. I enjoyed your web site.

Shun,
Out of curiousity, what would you choose for wildlife. I chose the 5D for portraits and people photography. I use the 24-70 2.8, 85 1.2, 135 2, and 200 2.8 lenses. It does a wonderful job for what I use it for. When I bought it, it was spitting hairs between the 5D and D200.

Mark,
I do have a nice Manfrotto tripod that I used to use with medium format cameras.
Yes, Canon is no longer doing repairs for the 500 4.5. If I could find one in good condition, I would still get it. There isn't any on ebay right now.
I am still uncertain as to if the Nikon MF lenses will work on my 5D, I just assumed they would.
Thanks,
Terry

Thanks guys. I was trying to keep my budget at $1,500. Shun, do you think that the Nikon 600 is a bad idea? Terry
-
Shun, thanks for the link. Sounds risky. I was going to use it on my 5D. I want to experiment with wildlife, mostly ducks, squirels, etc. I want something longer than 400, but don't want to invest thousands of dollars. Canon MF lenses won't work on my body. I have always loved Nikon lenses and hoped to get something to work great. Thanks, Terry
Wide angle lens focal legnth choice
in Portraits & Fashion

Hello,
I currently use a 5D and have lenes from 50mm through 200mm. I want a wide
angle for full body and family portraits. I am considering a Zeiss 28mm that
is has very well controlled distortion, and performs well close up. Is this
too wide. Would I be better off with 35mm?
Thank you,
Terry
