    Cholla cactus

Great image. Really feels like Organ Pipe. Clear and refreshing. Great tonal separations. Great printing. I can feel the cholla spines digging through my boots already. James
  1. Man how I love this plane. Pretty just sitting there warming up the old Pratt and Whitneys. Man what a sound they make. I got to see them take off for the re-enactment of the Billy Mitchell flight in San Diego. Awesome. James
  2. My comment deals with the fact that there is too much blue in the image. Those rocks during this time of day are a nice orange flesh color. But here they have a bluish cast. A warming filter could have been used or at least implied in the Shop. A printer could make a good print from this. This is a very special place in Utah/Arizona. Very little water around here except for one big hole. James
  3. You need to find you exposure index so that you get good shadow detail. In this image there is no shadow detail which degrades the image. And the sky has so much density that it exposes as blank white and blows past the foliage so strongly that the upper part of the image appears blurred. And the water in the falls isn't white but grey. This is all very easy to correct with a little calibration of your media and equipment. The image had the potential to really be great but technique ruined it. James
  4. Very nice indeed. I love it. This is one time that the focus falling off into the background doesn't bother me. I think it enhances the image very well. And the colors are superb. The strength and mass of the columns work very well to really balance this image. Great work. James

50mm lenses should almost never be used for portraiture. Just look at the bug shnozz and the crosseyed look from being too close. And women always look better with good makeup and softening the image. Bad color cast here too. Back to studying proper technique. James

    Storytime

This shot doesn't work for many reasons but the biggest drawback for it is the wide view. If you want to do what I feel you wanted to do with this you needed to really zero in closely on the story teller and his audience. It doesn't matter that the books be shown. It's the story teller and his audience that is the story here. Crop that sucker and saturate that color. Or desaturate it. But don't let it look like gold 400 with bad filtration and worse printing. There is a real intimate story here and you're letting it get away. Great idea. james
  5. Nice image. Could use a little more contrast for punch. I like how you chose to let the light fall off the uninteresting bottom portion of the image. The central area of the arch could use some judicious bleaching to really pop the effect of the light as well as the striations in the walls. James
  6. I really like this image. Very well done. All focus is on Trish. Nothing takes away the focus on her. And the lighting emphasizing her and falling off on her attendants is great. Nice image. Great balance to this. Good tonal range here too. james
  7. I agree. Kind of cliched but effective none the less. Image could use a boost in contrast in printing. Kind of flat. Short tonal range. Would be more effective with shiney skin and more detail in the wall. James
