    Max 1 (nude)

Go and have a look at some of the classic shots like this from Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard. Or Newton. The models are in focus all the way from the tips of their toes to the tops of their heads. This isn't. I love the idea very much. Very creative. I agree, the lighting could be better. The model nmeeded a little body makeup to lessen the rough skin textures too. The carpet competes with the model because of the texture and because of the blemishes in it. Seemless paper is cheap. TMax 400 is possibly the worst filmfor these type images. It is very unfriendly to the female skin. Plus X would have been superb or FP4. Techpan would have really been a good choice. Super XX was the best film of all for this genre of image. It had an extended red sensitivity that portrayed the female skin to it's best advantage. A little harder more directional light will be better here too.I love this models hair. Like Jean Harlow's.
  1. Great image. One of the most creative I've seen here. Great balance and story. Good use of manipulation. This is what I was talking about on the discussion board. This is originality at it's best.

    Simplicity

Very nice. The subject could have been made a little simpler by taking off a branch here or there if that was possible(your backyard for instance) but I like the image nontheless. James
  2. Why did you put the players so off center? Not a criticism at all. Just wondering why photographically. I always ask my students these questions so they will ask them the next time they pull the trigger. If you can come up with a good reason then it's a good technique.
  3. I don't always follow rules just for the rules sake but as guidelines they come in handy. I feel the placement to the right in the frame would have been much better to the left of center because she is too crowded at her feet. The image isn't balanced because of this. She has no place to put her feet. But theirs plenty of room behind her. I'd feel more comfortable for her if her feet had someplace to go when she stretched.
  4. This is cool Maurice.I'm not sure about the color of the dress when everything else is colorless(or at least the color itself) but the image is fairly unique. I would like to see more detail in her face. That tells even more of a story. What is her expression? What is she thinking and what is her mood? These can be answered if their is some viewer conection there. Without her facial expression it is just a blank and may not hold the viewers attention. Nice idea. James

    Shadow ...

I had to come back to this. At first I didn't like it but it stayed in the back of my mind and kept saying it had something to offer. And it does. Nice image. It needs a lot of work on the finer points like spotting. When you put something up here for critique, make sure it has been cleaned up. But this is a nice image.
  5. Nice expression. Good tones. Great lighting. I'd like to see it cropped so his cup or whatever it is is gone. The focus is his face. Dad's legs don't really stand out much even with a full print. Crop it so this childs face beems from the whole picture. It's worth it. James

Yeah! I can feel it. This image sings. Really nice tones. Great balance. This is one of those images where it's ok if the subject is looking into the short side of the frame. Great use of space. James
  6. I like the color here. But the focus really falls off and that detracts from the image. For flower portraits of this nature I feel the focus should be right on all the way through the image. If the image is supposed to have focus softness, this isn't it. But marvelous color. James

This is pretty. Nice color and balance. The artifact seen as banding disrupts the smooth color of the water. Is this from scanning or sunlight striking the water in the morning light? James
  7. This is very nice Amy. You do good work. I like the models positions. It makes you look twice because there are only two mirrors and yet you see six nudes. I like this. Technical aspects are right on. James
  8. This is an interesting subject. But it wasn't exposed properly nor was it printed well. The subject needs much more contrast. But due to lack of proper exposure just printing it with a higher contrast won't save it. James
