Looong Roots. White Sand National Monument, NM.
elie commented on BelaMolnar's gallery image in Landscape
Very nice composition. I really like the way the eye is capture by the root, moves to its shadow and then continues along the line to arrive to the bushes and then the tree. You can almost feel the water/life flowing from one to the other. A bit more texture/contrast on the sand (middleground) and root on the foreground would have made for an even stronger picture as it would have enabled the viewer to appreciate some of the textured nuances captured by the picture. That's a really minor point though - and a matter of personal state - so not a downside at all to this very nice shot ! Good work ! -

I like the expression and the gesture - makes you wonder what he's thinking about as he smokes. Also like lighting on the left side of the picture. One minor comment is that the light on the right side of the picture (at the shoulder levle) seems darker than the lighting on the left side would suggest, resulting in a somewhat artificial black in an otherwise well balanced picture. Might be worth trying to increasing the exposure a bit on the right hand side and use vignetting instead - might do the trick. Hope that helps. Good shot !

I like the geometry and texture in this picture. Also enjoy the plain blue square (upper right corner) and the stripes (in the middle at the bottom), both of which provide strong breaks to the otherwise crusty/old textures. I also like the idea of using different colors to highlight the different textures. The colors appear to be too saturated/vibrant though, which makes we wonder if the image can be printed at scale. Might be worth testing more subtle changes in colors/contrast. Hope that helps. Good stuff.

Picture taken with a old phone under heavy rain. One of the instances where low resolution gives the picture a painting feel (notably on the umbrella, and trees). Also like the solitude of the character going alone to a place unseen by the viewer. Constructive comments welcome. Tell me what you like, what you don't and what could be have done about it to make the image better. Many thanks and hope you enjoy it.

I like the industrial feel in this picture, from the boat to the beach of concrete on which these persons (or should I say shadows) are enjoying the last days of summer. The escaping line of the peer does a great job at breaking the symmetry. Reminded me of Rene Burri's famous Sao Paolo picture. Nice work.

Taken in nyc. In many ways, the scene seemed like a modern twist on Michelangelo's finger of creation, with the 'crowd' of nameless hands looking up to the one visible figure, seemingly intent on trying to save them to bring them to the other side, a place unseen to them but where the viewer can spot darkness lurking in the background. A reminder of the madness of crowds? Constructive comments welcome. Hope you enjoy it.

Such is the dance this wretched race must lead ...

I really love the way the title combines with the picture here. It enhances the picture's depth and narrative tremendously. Would have been great to get someone in one of the windows on the top row or lower the angle to make the shadows larger in the frame but I really love how each of these figures seem to struggle to go over the obstacles on their way - a dante's inferno indeed. Nice shot! -

Hi Bryan Nice shot ! Really like the colors and the facial expression - not to mention the smoke coming out of the subject. The only thing that ticked at first was the positions of the hands, which seemed to give the image a slight tilted feel. At same time, tilting and cropping to adjust for that would have taken some space out of the blue part of the image, which would have been a shame given the interesting smoke textures on the rhs of the picture. nice shot !

I really like the dynamic in this picture. The repetition of patterns, combined with the blurry background and the abscence of any discernable body parts gives the picture almost an abstract feel and yet the viewer clearly knows that we are looking at people marching in some form of parade. This battle between following the abstract lines and trying to focus the people wearing those masks gives the image a dynamic feel - the type of things one can only appreciate if one gives a chance to the photo to speak. Nice one !

At first glance, the image seems banal. Spend a few seconds, however, and it starts revealing suprising symmetries: women on the left vs. man on the right, open sandals vs closes shoes, pants vs legs, flip flops symmetric with respect to the pole, and of course this one hand among all these feet, breaking the very symmetries that first jump to the eye. An interesting example of how a picture can start to unfold as you look at it. Hope you enjoy it.

This picture was taken in a museum. More than the curves, what caught my eye was how the light reflected smoothly on the floor, reminiscing of Caillebote's famous painting "Les Raboteurs de parquet". The picture was taken at night and handheld, hence some of the blurry aspects, but the combination of curves, lights, reflections and the mysterious shadow peaking form behind the scene makes gives the picture an interesting depth. Hope you enjoy it too.
