Brian,

Could the solution be to only showing the average of the ratings the photo has received and hiding the detail of the ratings themselves? (I'd like to see 1s and 2s back cause something crappy photos don't deserve to receive the same rating than a below average one).
Direct ratings would show the name of the rater, would change the average but numbers would still be hidden too.
Complains should be very less important.
Does it sound good?

the problem is that all the other rates are way higher 5-7. Of course, this 3/3 rating is annomymous
You should sometimes believe that 7s are not more deserved than 3s. (I said "sometimes")

faster and faster this website... : )
-
Don't worry Eric, now you've asked for, an admin will change it for you. Just wait and see.

Funny indeed Tim : ) and so right.
BTW, How many views your page is counting more now than before you've posted this thread? : )) (just kidding of course)

That's the only way and the deleted post will be counted within the four ones you can submit (so to say, you lose one).

JP,
Click on "about us" link at the bottom of the page, you'll read there recent statistics:
- 5.4 million visits per month
- 514,000 registered members; 8000 new registrations per month.
- 65 million page views per month

IMHO looks absolutly normal to receive ratings within a few seconds.

Regarding the anonymousity of the ratings, is it really disturbing? The most important is the few comments/critiques you can receive, ratings are more useful for the system in order to edit the "top photos" pages.

You're in a *no word* forum Eman... For critiques, try to post <A

I give you my point of view (although I'm a very poor portrait photographer): a good portrait is a portrait which conveys feelings. Either feelings shared by the model himself, or by surroundings of the place or by both. Even if I have my own aesthetical preferences, I don't care which light, which focused on point, which DOF, which toning, which crop is chosen, each case in an unique case.

On this very good website, you can begin by this page and then follow the available links.

Biliana,

With all the sincere respect I have for you, I'd like you to be sure of your question. Is your question "HOW TO MAKE A BETTER PORTRAIT?" or is your question "how to succeed to make a portrait recognized and highly rated on PN?". Looks like you're first looking for reconnaissance, but Biliana, You've got it. You're a talented photographer and each photographer wants to be better and better.
Please don't feel upset, that's not my aim but I find you quite hard regarding the lack of originality you say you're finding on PN. As you said it, everyone has his own likes and dislikes, originality still exists in sunsets, flowers, clouds, nudes, insects, monkeys and zebras, as well in portraits.
Nobody's able to answer to "How to make better portraits?". It's a too much general question.

-
BTW E Welthorpe is right, a search into old PN threads before posting any question is often useful.
-
A few members like to think that there are some 3/3 fanatic raters on PN. Maybe some overexcited of the mouse who can't stop skipping photos by using undeserved 3s are still active... But I prefer to think that low ratings are more honest than high ones.
Of course, you can be right: some very good photos receive low ratings, that's simply human behaviour into photo.net's world.
how come i'm not getting any 1's or 2's?
