  1. Juvenile Alligator. I found this one lying next to a pond. It was

young, only about 4 feet long. He was very scared so I had to

    approach on my belly.

The lighting isn't perfect- The sky was partly cloudy. The sun

would peek through the clouds and throw my exposure to the extremes

    in both directions.

When is the best time to photograph animals such as this? When I

wait for the evening time the dark colors of the animal cause my

photos to lose definition and detail. Conversely, sharp light gives

me bright spots on the skin.

    Thank you for your suggestions!

I was not sure what you were saying with this picture. Is the focus on the building or the statue? Is the irony that there is a statue of old times in front of a new building?

The building is fairly uninteresting. The statue in front of the building could have been interesting had the shot focused on the statue to one side of the frame so that it could be seen against the new building for contrast.

  2. I originally rated this A5/O6.

Looking at it several more times I believe I rated this too low. At first it threw me because it looks like a painting- a good thing, but I tend to gloss over photos that strike me as being PhotoShopped to death. I rated yours by that standard before giving it the second and third look that it really deserves.

IMHO, I think I'd rather see the original photo before you treated it this way. I believe it would have been fantastic as taken. That's just my opinion, but it's your image to do with as you see in your mind.

It really is a great image. 6/6

  3. I love this. Loneliness. Emptiness. Even the house is empty- not even a window. The bleak sky over a bleak landscape.

What really draws me to this photo is that there is nothing that should be drawing me to it- yet I can't stop looking at it.

I wonder- "Who lived there? Where did they go? Why did they live there in the first place? Were they too sad to stay?"

    I love it. 7/7

This is an unmanipulated photo, other than cropping in on the edges.

I would greatly appreciate your suggestions that will help me make

better photographs. Thank you for viewing my photo.

  4. This is a bow tie fan's dream machine. You captured the essence of Detroit Iron and Class all at once.

To the uninitiated it is just a car, so reworking the photo for them in order to follow photographic 'rules' is a lost cause. This photo is not about photography, it's about the image and the emotion it evokes. It captures the raw feelings that 55-57s invoke. People who get this car get this photo.

This photo should be hanging framed anywhere classic cars are appreciated. I'd buy this print and give it to my Dad for Christmas. He gets it. Don't change a thing.

    Orangutan in B&W

I am trying to develop a better sense of how to capture a subject and

make an interesting composition in my photos.

This was taken at Lowry Park Zoo here in Tampa. The original- one of

my personal favorites- was somewhat larger. I personally love it as

it was originally taken. Everything that I read about photography,

including critiques, seems to center around cropping the image

tighter. This appears to be the going trend, as all the photos I am

seeing anymore tend to be very tightly cropped. While I do

understand the concept of eliminating elements from an image that

detract from the main subject, I cannot help but to feel as though I

am now viewing almost all current photography through a keyhole.

I decided to give it a shot. I also changed the image to black and

white to get rid of some distracting background that was peeking

through. Even though I love the original, I readily admit that it

looks just like a picuture of an orangutan at the zoo.

Please comment. I greatly appreciate your comments and suggestions

    on how I may improve.

Gorgeous photo with excellent detail and expression. Not a criticism at all, but I guess I am the last person on Earth that doesn't like super-tight crops. I am beginning to feel as though I am viewing photography through a keyhole.
  5. Absolutely beautiful!

Aside from the wonderful photography, this evokes those very deep emotions that a parent feels when seeing the wonder, purity, and innocence in your own child.

    Captivating.

Thank you for the compliments. I have looked at both of you guys' photos and I must say that after viewing photos from each of you, your compliments really mean a lot to me. Both of you have made some truly excellent photos.

I realize the background leaves a lot to be desired from a portrait point of view. This was a candid photo of my not-yet-two-year-old son. At his age he doesn't stand still for long... I get my photos as I can!
