johnw436 1 Posted January 2, 2005 What a wonderful picture. I got so lost in the textures and tones that it took me a while to realize that I was looking at snow! Very nice image. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted January 2, 2005 The subtle tones in te snow are particclarly good and the little pine thingy looks great as before. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted January 3, 2005 Good composition and beautifully exposed..... Happy new year and best of luck for 2005.... Kindest regards. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted January 3, 2005 Very aesthetic motif, compositionwise nothing to improve. I looked at the histogram because I think it is a bit soft, played with levels and curves and tried not to touch the subtle tones in the snow. Link to comment
bekster 0 Posted January 4, 2005 Thank you Gaetan, John, Colin, Zafar, and Carsten for the feedback! I haven't much practice with B&W conversion. Carsten, the changes you made do render a stronger image... thank you for taking the time to work with it. Link to comment
neil fortescue 0 Posted January 4, 2005 Becky, you always manage to get the depth of field so right: from the snow crystals in the foreground to the distant rocks. Enjoyable image. Link to comment
cappoldt 0 Posted January 4, 2005 VERY nice! You're going to print and frame this one, yes? Link to comment
bekster 0 Posted January 5, 2005 Thanks Neil, it is really the Coolpix... I just stop it down and clamp it into the ground pod. It still feels like a toy when taking pictures compared to my film SLRs. This was through a polarizer using the matrix metering + exposure compensation for the snow. Glad you like it! Christopher, thank you! I think I should have someone print it for me as my prints are consistantly poor... but yes ;) thanks! Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted January 5, 2005 I love all of the images in this folder, Becky ... but this one is superb. Now, as I contemplate hitting the southwest and Grand Canyon (etc.), I need to also add to my list taking lots of B&W images. The textures that you can get are amazing. Great work!!!! Warm regards! bekster 0 Posted January 6, 2005 Thank you Lou Ann! I think the most interesting views at Bryce are from the trails so dont forget your boots when you go... Link to comment
WJT 653 Posted January 6, 2005 Ahh! Exposure compensation for the snow, that's the secret! A lot of my snow photographs turn out looking like an 18% gray card; I need to compensate. This monochrome conversion version (with Carsten's tweak) is stronger than the color version. For me, the composition is more apparent. Regards. Link to comment
novastorm 0 Posted January 7, 2005 Great composition. Like the way you have used the large mound of snow with the pine poking out to settle the background down, so it's not to busy. The adjusted versions, including the colour one are also very good. Cheers Nova :) Link to comment
cappoldt 0 Posted January 7, 2005 Becky, I have had a lot of success printing b&w prints at www.mpix.com They use a "true" b&w paper that allows great tonal range. Inexpensive, and they ship very, very quickly. Just upload the picture there, easy as pie. Link to comment
bekster 0 Posted January 8, 2005 Hi Walter. I didn't think I could teach you anything about taking snow pictures . ;) So that is great! now I'm wondering if it is ethical to replace my post with Carsten's version, would destroy the context...Thanks Nova, glad you stopped by my folder! I was looking for this shot all the way along the trail so it was really easy to compose...Christopher, great you gave me a lead on the printing. I think I will give it a go, thanks! Link to comment
donnaalbers 0 Posted January 18, 2005 Bryce in B&W. . . this is a wonderful image. . . great work with the foreground, nice texture in the snow . . the total composition comes together very nicely. Link to comment
bekster 0 Posted January 21, 2005 I had this printed 16x20 in the "true b&w" process of mpix.com and it is the biggest view I have ever had of any of my pictures. The print is fabulous and I am delighted... I think I will order some more hehehe... Thanks Christopher for the recommendation! Link to comment
