by golly juha, you read this photo just like an open book. that's
exactly what we were were after, keep the focal and posing
plane perpendicular to focal axis and isolate the BG by
DOF. But no wrinkle faced old men with funny hats on - no good picture ;-)

a bit too "manufactured" image. Nice idea with
the butterflies. Good positioning of the image
in the picture area. Knock out gorgeous model!
-
great tonal greenish scale. Crisp in detail. Too bad
the right foot of the bird is out of focus, but that's
how it goes usually.

yep, lovely and strange. It is as if she was floating in
some "color space". There is a pretty lofty dissonance in the color
harmony between the dress and the wall.

Sorry if I sound limited, but how is it possible that this photo
scores 29 6/6s, and 3 other point combinations out of 32 total?
This is exactly as probable as seeing 29 green cars in a row
in a downtown avenue.
Is there something amiss in the rating system of photo.net?

About 85/1.2L -
I actually do not own that lense, I borrowed it for this
shot. The lense is a stellar performer optics wise, perhaps as sharp
as 135/2, and the wide aperture makes it possible to shoot
at virtually no light at all. On the negative side, its
bulky, way heavier than 85/1.8 (which I do own), it is very
slow to focus (reminded me of some army howitzer that was
rolled into a position) and had (at least this model on my 5D)
a systematic focus failure of focusing some 5-10cm behind
the subject in very low light. It also vignetted quite a bit at
1.2. Operating the lense at <1.6 is quite a nightmare, the DOF is just
too shallow for fast focusing, and you end up spending frustrating
amounts of time figuring out if you should drop the tip of the nose
or the ears out of focus of the ravishing model(s).
But if you insist on top notch optics quality and do not
mind carrying two pounds of glassware in your bag at some $2000,
go right ahead :-)

Shot with EOS 5D hooked to 85/1.2L at 1.2 1/25 sec, hand held
at ISO320 during a summer night in Helsinki Finland. Strange
light - as there basically is no light except the cool, misty
haze of the sun that just refuses to set.
-
Heh... the shot itself was not planned, but of course
the location, gear and its settings took quite a bit
figuring out. To quote a golf legend - the more I train,
the luckier I get ;-)

On location shot at Popfashion 2007. Comments and tips
appreciated.

Jep, ratet on pienempi䠨ieman yli yhdell䠰isteella on average. En tosiaan
tied䬠mist䠴䤠johtuu - Herra kolme/kolmonen on ainakin ollut
viime aikoina asialla :-/

Yes, very good idea to solve the "empty hands" problem
for the model. The colors are very well in balance, and
the image composition is good, the subtle shadows on the wall
are a vital element of this picture.

thanks. It was shot with the monster 85/1.2L at 1.2.
It is by no means intended to be a normal bikini shot in
some beach paradise, but instead convey a feeling of the brief
northern summer that still has its spectacular beauties,
here and there ;-)
-
Thank you! Oh by the way, please view it **larger**!

This is to salute the waking spring and finally
summer in up here in Finland.

Well, Carl, your comment makes me a bit sad, as photo.net
is the best rating www service for photographic quality
out there, and we can not do any better than that :-(
On the photo above, it is not without merits - the
model has quite a dynamic pose with lot of energy.
the floodlights, audience and projection on the wall
are quite a bit distracting, however.

Thank You for the comments! Making on-location shots got quite
a bit easier with lenses you can use to knock out unwanted details from
the background. I have used 85/1.2L, 135/2L and 300/2.8L, and
the monster bazooka 300/2.8L is, unfortunately for its large size
and weight, the winner in generating isolating effect of the (human
size) subject. 85/1.2L was a love-hate relationship, the DOF was just
too narrow at full aperture, making you a sloppy focuser most of the time.
135/2 is second to none if portability is the key.

On location shot for Essi's portfolio. Comments, pls!

Ah, the Mr. "3-3" took a break from jerking
off and rated the photo (yes, you guessed it), 3-3!
Well, I guess that's the only functional button
on his keyboard, other ones being mysteriously
glued together.

Shot with 300/2.8... the model's face tolerates the
flattening effect amazingly well. The blurr is due to the
shallow DOF. Makeup by Miss Satu Heinonen. Comments appreciated.
