Well done...very nice timing, very good clarity. Picture is way better than the 3/3 that somebody gave you. Sports photography gets no respect on this forum.

    Much better!!!

Very well done. The only thing I could possibly say that I wish was kept in the picture was the entire shadow of the dog...but that is hindsight. Very well done. I'd be proud if this were in my portfolio.

Very nice...i love to tones. I agree that the chair leg needs to be taken out...along with that spot in the upper left corner.

    Very well done!!!

Emily...very well done!!! I really like the setting and the mood that it presents. The tones are also lovely.

Are you using a filter for the softfocus? Or is it a process in photoshop? That is one of the techniques I haven't quite figured out yet (not using a filter).

Hi Emily. For this, I'm using a roll of white seamless backdrop paper (9ft rolls). Cheap and easy to use. With all the children I've been shooting lately, I wouldn't want to use anything else...I'm finding that kids like to intentionally destroy things for fun. When they do, I just cut off the destroyed portion, and roll me out some fresh paper.

Thanks for the comments. Does the pic look too dark by any chance? I just picked up a new LCD monitor, and looked good from that monitor...but now that I'm at work on a CRT, it looks a bit too dark. But its possible that my work monitor isn't calibrated properly.

Emily...I just picked up a 3ft x 4ft softbox. This was my first shoot with it. That is the main light in the pic, also the source of the catchlights. Light was about 30degree's to the right, and a little high shooting down slightly. I upgraded from my 28"x28" softbox, and am so glad that I did. I'm thrilled with the results.

Again, thanks for taking time to post.

Very nice!!! No, I don't think that the highlights are too blown out. If you ever have blown out highlights, desaturate the photo and make it a black and white...it always seems to fix it.

My only gripe is that I'd like to see a little more catch light in the right eye. The left eye has a beautiful catchlight, but the right just kind of drops off, obviously due to shadow, but having it seems a little unballanced by not having as much light in the eye. I'd personally go as far as dodging the eye a little bit, just to lighten it up.

Regardless...excellent job!!! I'd be thrilled to have this in my portfolio.

Well, I thought that your other ski photos deserved 7's...I don't see why this one should be any different.

I think you have this sport down to a science.

    Well done - Another 7/7

  1. Elaine, I can relate to a partial desaturation. I really like the effect. Its alot warmer, and more pleasing than a full desaturation, since the greys tend to have a bluish hugh.

When doing a partial desaturation, I try to increase contrast...otherwise, the pictures just look flat and unprocessed in my eyes.

You have a nice collection. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

  2. Very nice. Much better contrast and saturation. I don't know if the other pictures posted were intentionally desaturated, but this looks much much better in my opinion.

You have very nice soft even lighting.

    Well done!

Very interesting perspective. Its one of those photographs that you just have to click on when you see the thumbnail.

I don't recall ever seeing a diving photo quite like it. Well done - 6/6

Photo seems quite small though, would like to see it bigger.

I think that this is very much underrated so far in my opinion. I think that it works very well. The photo has wonderful tones, and contrast. A very interesting perspective. I may have to "borrow" this set up next time I shoot a newborn. :)

Well done - 6/6...hopefully more people will come around and see the light of this one.

...Would like to see it bigger.
