    Archive #4

The gray of the building melds with the flat tone of the sky, creating an illusion of the grid floating.

    Walking by the bay

This stands out in your portfolio due to that strong diagonal with the tree and the luminous white of the dog, nose pointed toward the horizon. A lot of visual balance and tension here.

    Yojimbo

I always like photos where the entire emotional heart depends on such a small detail as the angle of a head.

    Two against one? Unfair!

    Portraits-130

Americans have a different comfort level regarding personal space. I'm struck with how compressed and cramped your subjects are, but I'm sure that's my own stuff going on.

    we used to see

The only thing clear is my private, contained little world.
  8. Great photo, extracted from the archives, I suppose. The coat is absolute perfection.
  9. It's great how the trail takes the viewer through and leaves the rest of the hike to the imagination.
  10. No camouflage here.  Fortuitously captured.

    Debris in a Canal

No stone left unturned.  There's great beauty in muck and mire.

    Monkey Trials

This is Able, a rhesus monkey who flew on a Jupiter mission in 1959 and who body is preserved at the Smithsonian, encased in this contraption. I took very few shots because I had a surly 9 year-old with me, but this one shot had "creep factor "and I felt compelled to post it. I tinkered with the color and enhanced the reflections a bit bring out otherworldly elements.

    A House Divided

We took the kids to DC last week as part of a road trip. They did not appreciate the gravity of this monument, nor could they, given their young ages. My wife was quite moved, reading the Gettysburg Address inscribed on the wall, thinking about how divisive the country remains over these same basic human rights and freedoms. I wish humans were evolving into better creatures, but the evidence seems lacking. I didn't want to take a straight-on shot, which seemed trite. I was drawn to his eyes. I grew up in central Illinois, so Lincoln was part of the local lore. I was moved.

    The Old Guard

Grandly captured. The slight cast gives a yesteryear sheen, which befits your subjects.

    Calling... 140

This has a bit more pathos than other photos in this series and stands out.

A Rose For All Seasons II

I like how you've managed the focus, sharpening the flower itself and throwing the leaves slightly out of focus to avoid competing with the main attraction.

    An Explosion in Pink

The little hint of blur amplifies the explosion.

    wag

A brilliant burst. The B&W version helps me focus more on the graphic elements rather than being bowled over by the color.

    Under Observation

The child in the mask makes the scene even more ominous. An interesting illusion.

    Seen, Not Heard

My kids are Mayan and although very "American" (whatever that means), they seemed quite connected to their birth country. I did not feel like an outsider as much as extended family, given our deep roots to the country and its people through our children. We were treated with utmost kindness. Several times, people told us in Spanish "thank you for caring for our children." Now that felt weird, since our desire to parent these kids was not out of any sainthood that my wife or I possess.
