The baby photos in the whole series are wonderful. Would you mind sharing your workflow? What type of lighting did you use? Natural? What digital processing steps did you use? My niece is presently 5 weeks old and I'm trying to capture some of the same things.

    Thanks!

  1. Thanks for the comments.

Arthur -- the image was shot in raw, but theren't not enough dynamic range to capture any detail in the blown out spots. It was really bright that day, and most of this image was in the shade. Thanks for your comments, as always.

  2. Thanks, Fadel, for your comments. I think it's an interesting and emotional photo, too, and am a bit surprised at the low ratings. Perhaps because the subject is a bit non-traditional?
  3. Since there was a bit of interest in this shot, I thought I'd post my latest (and hopefully) final version. I cropped the top 15-20% off, removing a mostly uninteresting area (and the distracting bright window reflection) and focusing attention on the people. In doing so I chopped off the top of the Kerry sign and gave it an even more horizontal aspect ratio, but I think it was a reasonable tradeoff. I also did a curves adjustment to increase the contrast and give the image some pop. There's room for some additional contrast adjustments, but right now I'm attached to the smooth middle gray tones.

    Comments, as always, are appreciated.

Douglas: I agree with your comments on the woman holding the sign. She seems to be proudly refusing defeat. All of the characters seem to tell the same story in slightly different ways. The guy on the left is actually my favorite. He's so lost. He doesn't even know where to look. He just reflexively clings to his sign.

    Thanks for the comments, all.

Erik: you're right, the sroke is starting her catch. I took about 20 photos like this one and this is the one where the crew has the best timing! (It probably would have been better if I photographed the 'Championshiop Eights'; this is from the 'Collegiate Eights' race.) And it was a completly overcast day so the water was dark and mostly gray. Since I used a polarizer to cut down on glare, the water was even darker than usual.
