Yellow / Orange filter for low contrast?
Didier Lamy replied to justin_ng1's topic in Black & White Practice
Contrast? Oranges with a BW MRC yellow-orange 040M filter factor 4 (2 stops). Tmax 400, -1 stop metering on the leaves, f8 1/1000 50mm ZF2 1.4. No post processing. -
Not a problem of speed (Strasbourg France). Just trust based on ~overall quality. Don't ask me to elaborate, my command of English is not good enough for me to risk walking on this kind of slippery ground.

My problem is how long will this site still be around. I am here for the great infos I get from other people (thank you everybody), which is free, and for the storage of a few photos that I can show to different kind of people when necessary. This is why I am paying, and I will not renew my subscription because I have lost trust in the future of PN, And I dont want to invest any more tme in moving up photos here that I will have soon to upload elsewhere with my present stock.

Is there something wrong with my Nikon Coolscan 5000?
Didier Lamy replied to chris.hulley's topic in Nikon
Maybe the scanner mirror need some cleaning, this is an important factor for good results. Get is checked by a professionnal only. In Europe Nikon Dusseldorf is quite helpful for this operation. I have been using a 5000ED with Nikonscan since it went on the market. I always kept processing by the scanner at the minimum, i.e. 4000ppi, 1 pass, autofocus at the beginning of the scan, autoexposure, no sharpening etc.. (and 16 bits B&W). And I did all the post processing later with a photo sofware. I am quite happhy with that, although sometimes clouds with Tmax400 end up with too much grain. -
James, this camera is before all fun to operate. Not that easy, just loading a film needs some training, but that is most of the fun. Framing is an art. And make it even beautiful by changing the dot and removing the white letters. ANd you will get plenty of Leica preople wondering what kind of MP, MA this is..

I own a M6 0.85 + a 50mm ZM, and I wear glasses. Difficult to frame without time and calm. My favorite equivalent: a F3HP + a very flat 40mm Ultron. A bit heavier, a lot noisier..

A little advice, please?
Didier Lamy replied to William Kahn's topic in The Digital Darkroom: Process, Technique & Printing
I have owned a SC-P600 since ~April 2015, and I have made about 350 prints with it. Most of them in B&W, about half on Epson Archival matte paper, and the rest on Hahnemühle ultrasmooth. No larger than the A4 format. I have found this choice excellent, albeit expensive. Very smooth transitions in greyscale (combined with 16bits files). I had once a clogging of the print head that required a repair return to change the part, following an accidental change of the type of black photo (I never use the "photo" one, so presumably there were some crumbs in it). Also I make sure that every week I print at least two printer tests, and a kind of rainbow to make the color pipes working, and thus keep this option available without problem. Before this one, I had an Epson R3000 for about 800 prints, same papers, same proportions. No problems, no visually obvious advantage to upgrade frome the R3000 to the P600, with my pattern of printing -
What's trending on Photo.net?
Didier Lamy replied to Norma Desmond's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
"The bare shoulders, come hither expressions, low cut necklines, hair and dresses blowing in the breeze, and derrière closeups have caught my attention..." Me too, thanks for the information, I had not yet discovered this section -

What is your favorite iconic photograph?
Didier Lamy replied to Landrum Kelly's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
Hubble Ultra Deep Field : each spot is a galaxy. Actually, this is a photo, but not photography: Hubble was pointed toward a dark spot in the sky, and left recording for days. We do the opposite here. Nevertheless what a photo make a few bright spots... -
In the "profile" mode, how to have the "gallery" mode as a defaut display? Like this example below, it has the same url as the "photos" display (dlamy | photo.net)

Likes are at least an occasionnal evidence that threads are more than a juxtaposition of statements (which appears not to be the case in the rare example above).

Level of interest in film photography
Didier Lamy replied to david_henderson's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
I shoot film because I like film cameras (and manual prime lenses). Simple, demanding, lasting decades+. My EXIFS records are little pieces of paper where I oblige myself to write techs details after each shot. Not good for high FPS shooting, but excellent for learning. And if the photo is good, I owe it to myself, not to a robot. -
Camera settting information that was deleted
Didier Lamy replied to mhahn's topic in PhotoNet Site Help
Same problem with my 100+ photos, and no answer, I guess because all the information is lost. And furthermore, since only ~50% of those photos appear in the "portfolio" configuration (why???), the only one in which new infos can be entered, I cannot restore the initial database, assuming that I would be willing to do so. -
I would never abandon photo.net, but...
Didier Lamy replied to Sanford's topic in PhotoNet Site Help
I expected PN to be a perpetual elders tree, with grownup amateurs like me listening to wise men, while kids were playing outside the shade. Time to find another baobab.. -

Didier Lamy replied to Sanford's topic in PhotoNet Site Help
The problem imho is to find a site that will last and is managed by professionals, on top of being good for its purpose. Anybody has an idea about Flickr as a stotage/display site? And another one for serious photography discussions? -

I don't see any way to cancel a subscription in the "my account" menu, just to add more money. Mr Photonet, could you add this option?
