I think that this subject does have a lot of potential to be interesting, if shot at a little differently. It appears as though you were shooting with a telephoto from a higher vantage point and if that's the case, I think that had the couple been snapped from a steeper angle while they were between the footprint paths, it would improve the composition. As it is, there is too much empty space of clean sand at the top of the frame and the corners are too dark and should be removed. It was good to place the subject off center though, and had they been better framed by the foot prints a little better, the composition would be much improved. Good idea.

Beautiful color, unique concept, and a very unique idea for an abstract. First the color is superb, and I've seen this type of color in wood before, yet I can't recall ever seeing a single photograph where it dominates as the subject itself. The very fact that it tends to shift from cold to warm from left to right is also a nice touch, complimented by the decision to tilt the photograph. The only thing that I don't like is how far the sharpness falls off from the center to the edges. If it were a purposeful depth of field issue then that's understandable but as it's composed, it looks more like a flat subject, and thus I expect that the sharpness would be relatively constant throughout. Regardless, as a color abstract it would make a nice wall piece in any room that had some color. Great eye, vision, and execution.

Hi Tanni. Your landscape work, particularly this portrait is simply outstanding. I've seen a lot of slot canyon photography before, but never one where the photographer had the vision to place themselves into the environment in such a unique way. The overall impression is as if you're sliding on something more fluid than a rock wall. I'm impressed, good eye, keep up the great work.

Fantastic shot! From a compositional standpoint, it couldn't be better, and it's immediate impact is instantly engaging. At first I thought that the image may be better suited for black and white since the grass is a little overpowering, but the color works great because of the difference in colors between the two figures in the image. Travel/documentary photography is my passion, so I'm probably a little biased toward this image, but I think it deserves far better ratings than 5's, and it's above and beyond the boring art photography that seems to be prefered by this photo community. Great job, thanks for sharing!
  1. Razaq, I think that your Pakistan photography is outstanding. I'm happy to see that you take real meaningful and revealing people and culture photographs, as I don't see enough of that on this web site. I too shoot with a 10D, and I recently got back from a year in China, and I have a number of people photographs from China's Xinjiang region. More than any other place in the world I want to take my camera to Pakistan to capture the kind of photos that you are taking. Your horse game photos such as these are superb, and your use of lighting is truly special. What kind of lenses do you use with your 10D. Anyway, outstanding portfolio here. If you have any time, please let me know what you think of my own culture photography from Xinjiang, China. I'd love some feedback from someone who appreciates and aspires for the same kind of photography as I do. Thanks for sharing. -Tyler

Daniel, I love the lighting and in the center of the frame. The light perfectly brings out the subjects facial and hand detail. I find the shoulder to the left of the frame a little distracting though, but I realize that's not something that could be cropped out without losing too much of the subject. I'd also like to see a little more of what he's resting against, but it's not quite recognizable, as the light really fades from the center. Very engaging shot overall though, well done. Where was this taken? I spent a year in China recently (see my portfolio) and there were numerous opportunities to take photos just like this one. The road and construction laborers would sleep outside up against whatever they could find. Brings back memories...
  2. Very nice street photograph Claire. I love skewed angle, perspective in this case, and can't imagine this shot working any other way. The fact that the bright background is not blown out or that your subjects are not lost in dark shadows is impressive, way to maintain that tonal balance. I've recently done a lot of street photography abroad, mostly in China, so I'm especially partial to such subjects. Cuba is a place I've been very anxious to get to for the photography opportunities. Also, how did you create that photo border, I love it.

    Like a butterfly

Francisco, I really like the symmetry of the composition, very thoughtful and creative. The color is nice, but I can't help thinking that shooting this from a slightly lower angle would have been more interesting, because you could still have had the symmetry, but it would also have allowed the striking wink colorings of the butterflys to take prominance.

Very professional and rather classy model shot. It seems like it would be easy to underexpose this shot, yet the tones are perfect throughout. Well done.
  3. Carlos, this is a very nice macro butterfly shot. The subject is unusually engaging simply for it's unique color. The vibrant greens, pinks, and maroons are great and the detail in the butterfly's body is outstanding. The overall composition seems well balanced, except that there may be a tad too much space to the left of the butterfly, but I'm not certain of that... Good nature shot, well done.

Nice overall composition and tones. I like that the subject is off center and is most exposed by the overhead light. While much more obscured in shadow, there's enough exposure on the other two passengers' faces. They could easily have become unidentifiable sillouhettes. Nice job.

Great color and use of reflection in the composition. I think that a square crop which eliminates much of the upper and lower black portions would be more effective though. As it is, there's just too large a void on the top and the bottom of the photos, and the space sort of pulls the eye away from the center.
  4. A decent baby portrait, but the lighting or the baby could have been positioned better. As it is, the lighting is too uneven, fading from light to dark from the lower left to the upper right of the frame.

A fantastic shot, I only wish that you would hae provided some details as to where the photo was taken. Nevertheless, perfectly composed for the subject, the tones are outstanding, and perfectly fits the the 2/3 rule of landscape composition. I just wish I could learn a little more about it...

    Alone Together

I like this photo because it does a great job of conveying people's natural tendency to space themselves out when given the opportunity. There's three benches and only one person on each bench, that's great! What bothers me a little though is the amount of sidewalk visible in the bottom right hand corner of the frame. I'm not sure how you could have framed this any better though, and still retained the same interest in the subjects...? Something to think about. Good eye if that was intentional.

I like the composition and think that it's well framed, balanced, and the pathway is perfectly situated. However, there's far too much shadow in the trees. If you use Photoshop, I suggest seeing what it looks like after making adjustments in the shadow/highlights options. That should bring out the texture and the details in the trees, while leaving the lighter portions of the photo as they are. Doing so will increase the noise though, so beware...

Great job of composing/cropping in that you've conveyed motion, while retaining the propper focus, which is the face of the performer. I also like that the motion is balanced between the drum on the lower left, up to the hair in the upper right hand corner of the frame. That creates a nice diagonal line for the eyes to follow. Great job!
  5. Fantastic subject with a lot of originality and potential due to the ice. I think that the shot could be composed a little better though if it were a close up shot from straight on with only the hands, head, upper torso, and horizontal section of the cross visible. That way the snow and the ice crystals as well as the detail of the actual figure become the focus. Using a telephoto lens would also blur the trees so that they are not a distraction. There's potential for a very powerful image there... Great subject find.

Good photograph but I think that a little too much detail is lost in the wall spout. Half of it is lost in shadow, when the subject be seen thoroughly. The wall texture and whirlwind effect of the water spray came out very nicely however.

    young joy

I like the idea and the subject very much. I have a similar set of photographs depicting joyous Chinese school children that I have yet to post. The only thing that really detracts is that the photo was taken with flash, which sort of kills the atmosphere to a degree. Under ambient light, it would be great. I understand that it could have been taken outside in the dead of night, where you would have no other option other than to use flash, so that being said, it's still pretty damn good at capturing the "joy" amongst the youth.

    Making a Point

          8
Technically, a nice portrait that is sharp and has great color and tone throughout. I could be missing the expressive quality of the subjec that is supposedly "making a point," but otherwise I don't really see anything that is engaging about the piece.
  6. I typically like using the various painting filters in photoshop, but I think the effect here is too overdone. The subject and it's composition I think are well suited for the effect, but this particular use is not very convincing. I would be more subtle with it and tone down the effect and see what you get.

Very nice off center composition, which is fitting for this macro subject. Focus and color saturation seem to be correct. Good job.
  7. Very nice photo, but in desperate need of a crop. The color, the sky, the two thirds land, the scene, everything is great except that the tilt is too distracting. I would adjust the frame so that the middle tree is perfectly vertical and then your immediate inclination will not be to tilt your head. Otherwise, great capture.

    Wise Men

          5
What makes this photo work is that you have pedestrians passing by in the background. If those are considered as part of the composition, then it almost feels as though there are cartoon wise men passing through the scene as if they were ordinary people. Placing them to the right of the frame was a great idea as it helps to convey the motion of the "wise men" from left to right. I would like to see the photo sharpened, and better atmospheric lighting would add significantly to the composition.
