<p>I own a lightweight tripod which goes along the side of my backpack, opposite from the tent poles. If I want to go more lightweight than that I take a small tabletop tripod with a decent ballhead, which fits in my coat pocket etc. I prefer that over a beanbag since it allows for true long exposures and is just as inconvenient to use. For the few times I take my full-size tripod for shorter walks I usually carry it by hand or stick two legs through the carrying loop on my backpack while securing the bottom with a strap.</p>

<p>Until last weekend, when we camped near a very dry stream, I had never noticed how reflective the undersides of hemlock needles are. The seem almost fluorescent (are they ?) in the beam of a headlamp. Here they are - a little bit less dramatic - the next morning.</p><div></div>

You just insulted my home state. :-) No worries Jose, you are absolutely correct! The clouds were amazing, the land is - well, western Connecticut, which is known for its subtle beauty rather than breathtaking landscapes. I actually thought long and hard about cropping the hill. That would have turned the image into an abstract. Yesterday, however, having just hiked that hill and a dozen more in a very humid 90 degrees I felt it was right to give those hills their dues and crop the image as a landscape rather than an abstract. Those two options had already been on my mind when taking the photo. I included the hills because I wanted to keep my options and I only carried one lens which did not allow me to zoom in any farther. A final reason was that I couldn't come up with a really good crop at the base of the clouds. Thank you for your comment Jose. It always good to learn how others see one's images, and I add a little bonus crop.

<p>We watched for about 20 minutes, then the kids got restless, we still had about 4 miles ahead of us and it wasn't getting any cooler, so we left. At that point there was no significant progress either way, but the snake was casually hanging in there with no intent of letting go, while the toad made fewer and fewer attempts to wiggle free. My money's on the snake, but it would have been very interesting to see how the toad actually got swallowed.</p>

<p>Rick, they look like "brain on a stick". Great state fare food. :-)</p>

Cirrus clouds over the Riga Plateau in western Connecticut. Just came back from a very exciting but hot summer hike along the AT in MA and CT. This was taken towards the end of the hike with visions of ice cream looming larger and larger. Thanks for stopping by. Your observations, comments and suggestions are always welcome.

<p>This week I was so ready to post a mushroom photo - really! We had been hiking in northern New Hampshire for three days and I had at least two images ready to go. Then I sat down in my backyard yesterday afternoon to read Freeman Patterson's amazing book <em>The Garden</em>. It took only a few pages until Patterson's wonderful images of flowers and trees got the better of me. I went inside, picked up my camera and started shooting. To complement Laura's "<em>Nature, red in tooth and claw</em>" I picked an abstract: yesterday's sunset as seen through the leaves of my apple tree.</p><div></div>
