    Kentucky Fall-6

          4

Hi Keith. Thanks for taking the time to comment on my photo. Looks like Kentucky got better color than the Northeast this year. You might want to try a circular-polarizer filter to cut down on the reflections on the leaves, but otherwise a nice display of foliage.

    Hi Michael,

I usually will resort to manual focus after auto-focus gives me trouble. As I am fumbling to switch into manual focus, I must swear repeatedly at the camera, lens and subject before the manual focus will work. Don't know why the swearing works, but it must be done :)

    Thanks for the comments.

    John.

  1. Hi Pete, thanks for messing around with photo. I don't seem to have the eye/talent/technique to make a photo pleasing on Photo.net. Your version of the image pops. Whenever I try to alter my photos, I get hung up on the way it actually appeared and make poor decisions about changes.

Hope you've weathered your winter well. It is just about over, which makes me depressed because it means my winter is just about to start. Though I do like autumn for photography.

    Thanks again. John.

  2. Thank you for the clarification Hiro. I really hadn't looked at the waves as a disturbance, because this is a scene I return to shoot so frequently that it can become mundane. I wouldn't have pulled my camera out except for the presence of the moon and planet so soon after sunset and I was expecting so little from the shot that I didn't even bother to set up my tri-pod. Had I done that I would have tried some slower exposures. Thank you for reminding me to look at those things that arecommon for me as new to somebody else. I need to be more tuned to my possible audience.

I don't understand the ratings on this either. I much prefer to have one comment versus any number of ratings anyway, so thank you for your comment.

Hi Peter, You really nailed the detail on the head of this loon. The red eye really stands out! One of the few times we want to get red eye in our photos!

You were dealing with a sunny day that caused a little glare on the back of the loon as well as the "blown" out spots on the water. Any detail in those spots on the water? If so I'd suggest digitally creating a layer that has those spots properly exposed so as not to take the viewer's eye away from your wonderful loon.

    My best,

    John.

Shot from a canoe while he was doing some fishing. Really difficult

to focus quickly enouhg to get a shot as autofocus was not

functioning with the rocking of the canoe. Also sharpness suffered

due to rocking of the canoe. This is a jpg version, but a much

better/detailed raw version exists. Really looking for tips on

shooting from a canoe if anyone has any. Thanks.

  3. Thank you Hiro for your comment and hopefully you will respond back as I am not sure what you mean by too much texture in the water. Is it too grainy? Also wouldn't a longer exposure make the moon even more a blur than it is? This was 1/60th of a second and I believe that you can detect movement in the moon at slower than 1/125th speeds?
  4. Very nice scene. Exposure and composition are good, but the building appears to be tilted just slightly. Maybe a quarter or half a degree of counterclockwise rotation. Mostly just wish I could view the scene in person.
  5. The secret to getting your photos to "pop" is partially experience, but mostly lighting. Photoshop has something to do with it for digitally showcasing your photo, but mostly its the light present when you snap your shutter. Outdoor exposures are going to be better if the angle of the sun is very low or if it is just before sunrise or after sunset. Next time the sun is setting, don't look at the sunset. Look instead at what the last rays of sunlight are striking. Usually the scenery will be turning golden. Shooting mid-day, you want a misty day and keep the sky and water out of your shots as those will be grey. A circular-polarizer filter will help cut reflections and give your photos a little more pop. Good Luck. John.
  6. Thank you for your comment Klaus. I'm glad you like the colors. That was my reason for posting. The wing would probably appear a bit sharper if I had used USM, but I forgot to do so.

Good try, better than I could do certainly, but the building appears slanted and the edges between the building and sky are too sharp. A few tweaks and this would be really good, though arguably no longer a photograph.
