Actually he's of Norwegian stock and migrated down south from his home in northern Minnesota. But I can see how you could find a resemblance to the General.

I would send your personal comment right back at you. I am indeed very fortunate to have you as a friend. You are a very positive influence in my life, both photographically and personally. I am enriched, and very grateful.

I am particularly grateful for your kind critiques of this. I know the person attached to that hand, and it was easy for me to find meaning in the picture. But it doesn't necessarily convey anything to the viewer. For me, photography is communication, and familiarity with the subject can deceive the photographer into making assumptions that just aren't supported in the pictures.

The boy is absorbed in his music, while the intense stare of the dog grips the viewer. The cup shows the purpose.

This is a capture full of warmth and reality.

A very small quibble. The tones of the boy's arms and hand somehow don't seem to match his face. They don't look quite true.

Mike, you are one helluva good pool shooter. This may be my favorite. Just enough light to identify the scene and create that marvelous atmosphere.

As is often the case, you see here what I saw.

There are lots of these abandoned little houses around, but this one particularly drew me, I think because of the setting and the light.

  1. There is so much that I find appealing about this picture. To boil it down, I like the simplicity - the lack of pretense, both in your shot and in the life depicted. Both are authentic, which I find increasingly rare. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, what Dan said. He is showing the same signs of time that I see when I look in the mirror. But there is such clarity and intensity in his eyes. His gaze won't let me look away. Fine, fine capture.
  2. I like the theme of people trying to stay authentic in an artificial 'plastic' world, and this picture fits perfectly. I think taking it from this perspective may be preferable to a frontal portrait. It says what it needs to say and no more.

    Goodbye Hug

Jack, my son has no siblings. I'm gratified that he is close to some of his cousins, and hope that those relationships will continue to enrich his life. Most of us need a hug now and then.

    THE BAKER

When your town has its bicentennial celebration, this is the kind of picture the local people will treasure. It is simple and honest, and portrays the baker and his environment skillfully and accurately.

In my mind you have been much too self-critical when it comes to portraits. You've done some excellent ones. I think it just a matter of overcoming the hesitation. My own experience has been that people generally just want to know why I want to take their picture. I tell them honestly. Sometimes I just say that I like their beards, their hats, or that I just think they have an interesting face. The only times I feel really uncomfortable is when I try to sneak a portrait and get caught.

This is a very good picture. I'm anxious to see more.
