1.
Let's face it: bodies don't matter that much. Most of us here probably have far more invested in glass than we do in bodies, even though Moore's law has ensured that we keep buying new bodies every couple of years.

I have a Sony A7 and a 5D (still going strong after 10 years!). I love the compact form factor of the A7, I love that I can play around with my old manual focus lenses on it and discover new ones from before I was born - it's my default these days when I'm shooting for the sheer joy of using a "real" camera (as opposed to my phone).

And yet... I have all that Canon glass I've collected over the years and it just works better on a Canon body. For all the talk of mirrorless cameras being the "universal mount", my favorite Canon lenses have old firmware that simply won't work in AF mode on the A7, even with an expensive adapter. So until I'm ready to abandon my 24-105 or my 17-40 or my 50/f1 (which will happen over my dead body), I'm going to keep on using Canon gear. Because the glass still matters more.

***

And so what, right? I mean, I'm not a professional, let alone a professional sports photographer. But the point is that if it's true for me, it's true for most sports professionals (not I didn't say "all" - and kudos to Chris for adding a true pro perspective on the opposite side). If you've got the glass, and you're used to the glass, and you're used to the UI of the body, you're going to keep on using that same system. Because it just works.

***

But I have to ask... why do any of us care? If Canon sells their next top-of-the-line body in the same form factor but without a mirror, who's right? Conversely, if they sell it with a mirror but shrink it down to the size of my old AE-1 (barely bigger than the A7), again, who's right?

Point being: why do any of us feel invested in mirrored vs. mirrorless? The installed base of lenses will ensure that Canon and Nikon keep selling bodies compatible with their existing mounts. Why do we really care what's happening under the surface as long as it works?
