Another interesting shot from a continuing series of candid street portraits

from times Square, NYC. At this point, I've been able to solve some issues with

my camera's white balance and hue shift. I'm happy with the color rendering and

I'm finding better spots for the light (available light only). If you check the folder

from whence this came, you can see the progress chronologically. Any

ratings/comment greatly appreciated. Thanks - Mark

Another interesting shot from a continuing series of candid street portraits

from times Square, NYC. I love the expression in this one. Yes, I see the yellow

light on his shoulder. It doesn't bother me, though. Ratings/comments on this or

any others in the folder greatly appreciated. Regards - Mark.

  1. A creative presentation of a common subject. I like it except that I think there is a bit too much going on in the very bottom of the frame, it's distracting to me. Overall, a nice twist of viewpoint.

Excellent. Wonderful pose and fantastic lighting. It is both dramatic and understated simultaneously. I love the warm painterly palette. There is the obvious comparison to the 'old masters' style of painting, or perhaps something contemporary, like Odd Nerdrum's work.

I'll agree about the thing on top of her hat. Yeah, that's distracting. I'm not sure about the eyes... I kinda like them obscurred. I realize that it effects people's perception of her. It sort of hides her persona. I'm in a purist phase right now. I'll probably attempt a bit of PS on these as time goes on. The eye area is an issue with many of these.

This has a very graphic quality to it. However, I immediately notice the haphazard lines inbetween the shadows and the random levels of the liquid in the vials (lighters). It has a sort of halfway-there look to it. It's an interesting idea, and well worth sweating out the details. This, in the end, will be what seperates it from just another experimental table top shot.
  2. Really powerful portrait. Her gaze is very direct. I sometimes hold my hand over one side of the face of portraits to show the 'two sides' of the subject's persona. When I did that to this one, I noticed how completely polar the sides were. Her left side (to the viewer) still seems hopeful - there's a touch of a smile. The right side, however, seems terribly sad. There's a bit of hair over the right eye that almost looks like an eyebrow that accentuates this. Really, this photo caught my attention and held it. My only criticism is that I'd like to see it more centered, maybe with a bit less on the left, and a bit more on the right. Anyway, you say this photo was taken in Sarajevo. I would like to hear the story behind it. Regards - Mark.

This from an ongoing series of candid street portraits. Available light only, no

retouching. I thought this had a nice graphic appeal to it. Comments/ratings on

this and any others in this folder greatly appreciated. Thanks - Mark.

This is one from a continuing series taken on 42nd St. in existing street light. I'm

really happy about this one. I've been doing these most nights for about a month,

and I think I'm getting better at working with the lighting. It is, to say the least,

challenging. I really like the classic, timeless look of this. There is a stillness and

intimacy to the image, almost as though she were seated or standing for a

portrait. Any ratings/comments on this or others in this folder greatly

    appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

    A blind beggar.

I disagree with your friend. I feel that the presence of color serves to emphasize the fact that, in reality, this really is a very monochromatic scene. That, to me, is part of the emotional power of the image. If it were in BW, I might assume otherwise. Anyway, excellent composition and a great work. My only criticism is that the shadow area under the rock might be a bit too overpowering in relation to the rest of the picture. However, I wouldn't crop that crack in the rock out. It's fantastic. Maybe just lighten that shadow a touch, IMHO.

Yet another in a continuing series in my NYC street portraits folder. To be

blunt, I'm completely astounded by this one. I'd really appreciate

ratings/comments on this. Be honest and tough. I'd also appreciate a look at

the folder in general. You'll see how I'm refining this series as time goes on.

Feedback would really be helpful as I'm trying new things every time. Thanks

    - Mark
