i like the colors of the photo and technically it is much better then the 3's people like to dish out on photo.net without justifying why they think it is a below avergae photo. This is not below average in my opinion. However, it doesn't say much. the picture doesn't answer many questions or any at all for that matter. Who is he? What is he like? Portraits should show the personality of people and give us a glimpse into his character. if you combine your excellent use of depth of field, good light use and some insight into his character you will have a real winner.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Allen. Great job catching this moment. For me, the photo begins and ends with the dog and the legs with red sandals. I reccomend cropping it to a vertical and seeing if you like it better. The "gesture" in the photo is in the dog's look and the balance of the ladies legs with the red sandals. I would also consider taking a look at it in black and white.

    Gesture

"If I say 'snow,' I could mean anything," Jay says. "Eskimos have maybe 94 words for snow in their language. What they're doing with those words is observing the specific nature of each aspect of something. So when we think of gesture in a photograph, we mean the essential quality of what the thing is doing. "When I talk to people in workshops and classes, I tell them I want them to be very specific in their seeing. I want the man standing in the picture not to be a symbol for a man, I want him to be that man, and I want him to be that man because he's interesting.

"Gesture is that thing, that signature that defines whatever it is you're photographing as specific to that time, that moment. It's the thing that makes the subject unique to itself."

Hi Denis - I liked this photo the best of your portfolio, with your birdman portrait being a close second. Your passion for photography is evident, and this photo stands out to me as evidence of an "eye" something you can't teach in a photo class.

I would encourage you to concentrate more on the gesture of the image. The reason why you are taking the photo, the difference between looking at a person and who that person is. The difference between a thing, and what makes that thing interesting as you've captured here.

    Keep up the good work!

Hi Jan - This is Nice. Have you considered cropping out the left side of her right down her hair? I think this would make for a more interesting comp and make it more intimate.

    Nice light!!

  1. This one caught my eye right away. I think he is a bit to close to the pole. I think he needs a bit of seperation. Also, some body language, gesture, that convelys his loneliness would benfit this photo.

It does have a mood and an isolated feel to it. I like it.

    Regret

I like this photo. The light is very nice. I think her left arm is VERY overpowering however. Maybe crop out most of it? Maybe a severe crop on the left and right to isolate her expression? Maybe B/W?

It looks like you had an idea in mind and shot it well,. The technical skill is there, but regret has to be true and RAW to really grab IMO.
