alan_kovarik
What are the most imporant photo contests or magazines (that could be helpful for my career)?
lex_jenkins
I don't know about contests, don't pay much attention to those. But for documentary photographers NY Times Lens blog, Burn Magazine and a few others offer annual opportunities for portfolio reviews, critiques and exposure. Spearhead
Lex is right that portfolio reviews in particular will be more helpful than winning contests. For photographers, there is nothing like American Idol, which has launched a number of careers.
Music and Portraits Blog: Life in Portugal

ellis_vener_photography
It depends on the type of work you want to do.
aplumpton
Not sure they are contests, but the Toronto annual outdoor art exhibition, that surrounding the Jardin de Luxembourg on its fences in Paris, and the Arles annual meeting in France are probably interesting venues for photographic competition.

We use to have a province wide yearly salon of amateur photography in different cities of Quebec Canada in the 1980s and 90s (hosted by the organization FQLP, since disbanded), regrouping more than a thousand photographers and which I was lucky to win on a few yearly occasions, but such overall meets in public places seem to be on the decline in my own area. Camera Canada College was (last reference 2011 in Federicton, New Bruswick) the site of a similar but country wide competition and conferences, but it is probably the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) that is most active and to which membership allows entry to their regional and annual competitions. http://capacanada.ca/category/competitions/
michaellinder
It seems that the potential opportunities described before the shift to the new PN are for heavy hitters only and not for amateurs (like me(.
