Christa Binder
Some of my pictures have been getting these random dark spots on them. Does anybody know what could be causing this? I have a Digital Rebel XT and I am thinking that maybe its on its last leg. Most of my photographs are fine. I would guess that every couple hundred pictures or so I get one of these.....

lauren_macintosh
Have you tried canon web site for a reference or emailed them on your question, My only question would be does it show up in the same spot all the time :
Wouter Willemse
What Lauren gets at might be dust on the sensor, though it would be a HUGE fluffy dirt particle. But, if it's always in the same place, sure it's going to be that.
The only time I saw these things occuring was when using the PS Elements importer with the 'red-eye correction' tool active. It seems to see a bit more red eyes than there actually are, and sometimes applies the correction on far too large an area.
So maybe nothing wrong with your camera, but did you change software recently, or changed settings in your software?
Christa Binder
No it is not dust on the sensor because it is not always in the same spot. I use CS3 and PS elements! Thanks for mentioning that because I have had the red eye correction tool active.
hjoseph7
What type of Editing software package are you using. I had problems show up like that when I edited the picture in PhotoShop Elements vestion 6. It had something to do with the "Red-Eye" function, but your problem might be something else.
phule
Yes, I think it would be useful to understand the workflow and editing process. Are these RAW files or JPG from the camera?
phule
And indeed I would look at the red eye correction tool.
Christa Binder
They are RAW. I have elements 6 as well. I am going to turn off the red eye tool and upload them again. thanks for all of the help.

However, it would appear (from the suggestions of others) that red-eye correction is the most likely culprit.
gordonjb
I recall reading a thread on the same subject some time ago and in that instance it was the red eye tool causing the issue. The example you've uploaded looks similar to the ones upload in the thread I mentioned above.

ken_jeanette1
I think you're just trying to build a cover story for child abuse. The Department of Child Services frowns on giving your children black eyes.

Christa Binder
It was the PS Elements 6 red eye reduction causing the problem. Thanks for the advice! On the other hand I was getting myself psyched about convincing my husband that I need to upgrade my camera. Oh well......
