First Nikon Wednesday in February. And what does one do while waiting for last week's blizzard to finish melting? Clean out the closet! And I came across this Leitz "D" style ball head that dates back to a couple years before I was born (it's holding up better than I am, it seems). Now, normally it's just plain indulgent when photographers shoot their own hardware. But once in a while it's an itch worth scratching. So today, if anyone wants to play along, it's Hardware Wednesday. Or, Mechanische Mittwoch (hey, it's a German ball head - I don't own one from Nikon!). But coming across this old family photography gear heirloom reminds me what a joy a well-engineered and well loved tool can be, even when it's over 50 years old. So, permission granted, Nikon people: pictures of picture-taking tools are encouraged this time around. Or whatever you've got - share!

00dj2B-560593084.jpg.24df67b9d9591bd57fb033d73ea034da.jpg

Hardware Wednesday be it. Or Mechanischer Mittwoch (Germans have three genders of nouns: male, female and neutral, 'Mittwoch' being male (männlich).) So for the idea of a German week - three photos from Berlin (Germany), Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology) and the old radio tower (Funkturm).
Hope you like them.
Regards, Miha.

00dj3H-560596684.jpg.6237f6875764169018087b7aa133cf8b.jpg

Another item from an era when they made things to last. This is a Weston III with case, lanyard, invercone and ND filter. Still in perfect working order - unlike most model IVs and onwards that used an inferior quality Selenium cell. Made from 1957 to the early 1960s it was the first Weston meter to be calibrated in ASA/ISO speeds rather than Weston's own speed rating. So still perfectly useable today.

And finally a Leica M6 with Summicron 35/2 ASPH to go along with Matt's tripod head, taken with D200, 70-180/4.5-5.6 at 70mm, f/32, 10s, ISO200

Thanks, Miha, for getting that "er" where it needed to be!

And Joseph: yeah that 35/1.4 is a favorite. Very versatile lens. But it does get swapped around a lot for a 16-35, a 70-200, and a 60 Micro depending on what else is brewing. But if I were only allowed to have one lens, that 35 would be a serious contender.
