Question for Habitual Selfie Takers

Sanford

Maybe they just need it to feel good about themselves. Who cares ? Their problem.
In the "old" days you would take a photo of landmark to be able to show to your friends and family, that you were indeed there. It would not anymore be convincing. You need to be in the picture for evidence.

What Fred said.
Sunday, when other lucky Canadians were busy up to their elbows in turkey dinners.
Well, Sanford, in my case it was to tease my two daughters living in Toronto and Hamilton who would much rather have been boating with their Dad and their dog at that moment. Summer is too short!

00dXFi-558832284.jpg.7ca170c6aba9e454d16b5d050592d9d9.jpg

" Also acting to subdue the assailant was a young man who swung a selfie stick at his head and used pepper spray."

From incident in Jerusalem riots. It is all about self defense, Sanford. As women with umbrellas used to fend of mashers. Mashers. I haven't used that one before,-where was it hiding. I find it amusing. But sure beats another cel phone video of a cat. I like cats and they were smarter or trained, could take better cat selfies.

Hi
I think selfies most of all is a natural and necessary extension of everyday communication via social media and text messaging. It replaces body language that is a natural and important part of communication where people are present and can see each other.

Frode, there was only one grammatical mistake in your comment. That's better than a lot of people... :-)

As for selfies, I only know one person who does them well (hint: she's very pretty). I guess the reason why people take them so often is because internet attention has a half-life of about 15 seconds.

A beautiful photo will get lots of attention over a long period, but a selfie, even one taken in a dangerous location, has a 15 second half-life.

There are exceptions, but there are exceptions to everything. People think that their particular dangerous selfie is somehow going to be more memorable than everybody else's. They think that they are somehow more special or more exceptional. Wrong - and sometimes tragically so.

At the end of the day, people can do as they please. However, I do have the right to deter people from doing something needlessly dangerous.

I ,m getting used to selfies, except those that are really blurry and mugging style. Not so much that t narcissism or anything deep. To paraphrase what Frode wrote, an extension of online communication via the internet.. Just says here I am and what I am up to. LCD screens flip to the front on some new models just for the selfie purpose. Social media is part of being human, as parakeets and parrots like to look at themselves in mirrors like people do.

LOL, in my opinion, if they're done well that means they're not done well. The point of a wave of the hand or a shrug of the shoulders is not to do them well.

YES! That is the point much more than how well done they are, IMO.

We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!

Karim, I try to keep the half-life of interest in my selfies down below two seconds. That way, after about ten seconds, even I don't even care how old and ugly I am. After ten more seconds, I'm in the ten f-stop under-exposure range--and not even detectable by most people. Since my short-term memory is now down to about three seconds, this works pretty well for me.

That leaves me more time to reread the front page of the newspaper over and over--each time afresh.

I just got back from a cruise and lots of shore excursions. Loads of people who were taking selfies were also delighted when I offered to shoot them with their cameras with nice backgrounds. Especially with couples. I guess they get it that selfies are still not as good as someone lining up the camera for a good shot.

There was one girl who was shooting selfies trying to get the St Laurence River in the background on the promenade in Old Quebec City. I was standing with my wife nearby shooting pictures. So this girl came over and handed me her camera and asked me if I would mind getting some good ones of her with the hotel and river and stuff like that. I probably shot about 8-10 shots. She was kinda cute and young. I think I spent too much time with her because by wife gave me one of those looks when I was done.
