Lumix GX85. I have C3 set to f5.6-1/2000 sec, continuous auto focus, but this was an impromptu shoot and birds were perched on limbs and shrubs; that’s when focus became the challenge.

I’d definitely like split screen. It was so easy to focus with my Nikon FTN. To be honest, I have trouble using manual focus with my digital camera even with the focus zoom feature.

Thanks for the reference to Photography Life. I’m reading those articles now.

It is very likely I was not patient and failed to recognize the settings. I blame the bird. I saw birds flittering about in the backyard and hurried outside to see what I could get. At that shutter speed it must have men motion blur as several have pointed out. So much for in camera and lens image stabilization.

Focus and re-compose - I keep forgetting to do that. Thanks for the reminder.

The subject is out of focus. DELETE. Gone forever (history is created the moment the shutter button is pressed). When I am in the midst of shooting pictures and suddenly I am consumed (and confused) with my camera's focus mode, I'm screwed. Cameras are not equal when it comes to focus technology. I do not begin to understand the technology - focus based on contrast, etc. My camera is not rated the BEST in focus, but I want to maximize its capabilities. And so, I must understand...FOCUS: Auto Focus Single (AFS) - Subject is still; Auto Focus Flexible (AFF) - Movement cannot be predicted; Auto Focus Continuous (AFC) - Subject is moving. Then there is Face/Eye Detection, Trackting, 49-Area, Custom Multi, 1-Area, Pinpoint. I KNOW! I can read the camera manual (over and over), and review the camera settings (over and over). But I am in the midst of taking pictures! Please share your thoughts. This is going to hurt:

I bought a camera 22 months ago. Seems like an eon (noun: an indefinite and very long period of time, often a period exaggerated for humorous or rhetorical effect) ago. I love this camera. It's discrete in size. Has in camera stabilization, 4K, and a bunch of stuff. I'm pleased with the photos (see David Rosen). So, WHY DO I SPEND SO MUCH TIME THINKING ABOUT BUYING A CAMERA? This camera is not waterproof. Neither am I. I have had to cradle it from drops of rain and flakes of snow, but not very often. I looked at the sister to this camera that is weatherproof, a little bigger and has more dials and buttons. I DO NOT NEED ANY MORE DIALS AND BUTTONS! And would I really buy a new camera that is almost identical in specs just because it is weatherproof? Tell me, Doctor, what am I suffering from?

I saw this Osprey nose dive into the water with a big splash. It was too far away to get a shot. Fortunately, it flew back in my direction. I recently saw a program on PBS, I think (but cannot remember the program name), which featured eagles living in the Chicago area. It is amazing what goes on with nature in and around towns and cities.

Sorry, I must have missed that forum. Thanks for the heads-up

So this is a philosophical discussion because I think the photo below is clearly Nature, but it does not qualify for the Nature forum and would be subject to deletion according to their guidelines. That's fine. I am ok with parameters. The birds feeding along the man made levee drainage ditch are not nature? What are they? Where would you have me post this photo? I saw this bird splash down into the water, not prepared to shoot that. I waited to see which direction she would fly after picking her prey out of the water and, fortunately, she flew in my directions. Camera set to birds in flight so I could not do much about the quality of the photo. Perhaps it should have be post processed in B&W.

Why can't I be on top?
