Another treasure trove of old photos...
movingfinger replied to Ricochetrider's topic in Casual Photo Conversations
I agree. I am a very big fan of Vivian Maier so perhaps my expectations were raised too high by the headline. The photos in the article, while very good, did not come close to VM's work - in my humble opinion. Still, I liked the article and I thank the OP for posting and making me aware of it. -
Consent in Street Photography

I agree with your comment on lighting. Many of the images, including the one by the student Paul that prompted the essay, have an HDR quality. The composition and subjects are great, but if there's anything I dislike about the her photos (and the one by Paul) it is this artificial HDR quality. I prefer a more gritty natural look to street photographs. ...but then I was never a big fan of HDR in any circumstance except maybe staged still lifes. -
I just came across an interesting article on street photography regarding permission. Myself, being a fan of street photography and liking to do it, I am in full agreement with the tenor of the article, in the US permission is not needed, and I like it that way. Here's the article, check it out and what do you thing? Link here: The Sticky Issue of Consent in Street Photography

There's an interesting video posted by Kosmo Foto discussing the KMZ Start, an SLR camera made in the Soviet Union starting back in 1958. It's less than 10 minutes and you can find it here: . Also at this link in the description of the video is a link for further reading on Soviet cameras. This video is apparently the first in a series of videos to come looking at camera designs over the years. You may want to consider subscribing to the channel.

Here is a very interesting historical account of camera and lens companies that were born and thrived in Rochester NY from around 1890 through the mid-20th century. It's an amazing mix of personalities with scientific, creative and business skills competing, thriving and prospering (sometimes only briefly) in a single city. Rochester was clearly the precursor of "silicon valley". Sadly it's time of thriving has long since passed. Link here.
