19.

When the camera writes images to two memory cards in the backup mode, the slower one of the two cards will determine how fast the write process is. That was why I mentioned preferably identical SD cards in the case of the D600.

Wow, you just solved the my problem with my D7200. I have the 95MB/s SanDisk Extreme Pro as the primary and a cheapo something in the secondary. I figured that primary meant first to do everything. So I just tested the camera with the single fast card and it is very noticeable. I just pulled the 95MB/s SanDisk Extreme Pro out of the secondary slot out of my D500 and WOW!!! So I will be shopping for the fastest UHS-II SD I can find right now.

The OP seems to be a wedding, portrait photographer. You typically don't shoot machine-gun style in weddings. Therefore, memory card write speed is not that critical, although you don't want to use some really old, slow cards.

I do not machine gun either. In fact, one or two is about it for me. But having said that, I do want everything right. I truly did not thing that second card much mattered.

I shoot 14-bit, lossless compressed RAW on the D500. My XQD is the faster card. I tend to use a SanDisk UHS-II card in the second slot to keep up with the XQD. The UHS-II SD is a bit slower. A regular UHS-I SD could be a lot slower than the XQD and it could be a drag if you shoot sports or wildlife action with the D500.

In realty, I am not sure I personally will be able to tell a difference, but it will bug me that I don't have my Acura NSX running on all cylinders.

 20.
Wow, what a nice set of captures. Not a bad one in the bunch.
Harry, That bokeh really makes this image. The isolation of a true candid. It also has a film feel to it, that I like allot
-
Stephan, I can see what you like, because I like it also. The eyes are the window to the soul. Even then through the shadows, you can make them out and they tell a story. The detail in this candid street portrait is very nice.
-
Sanford. Both are quite good. I love the way you framed them both. The arms of the father creating the frame around his boy and the second being framed by the tractor capturing a beautiful candid conversation. Excellent captures.
-
Marc, I always enjoy your street captures and these are some of the best I have seen from you in a while. I always love your ballsy approach. Having said that, that send image with the couple of what looks like the 3rd street promenade, is street at its finest. My favorite of the thread thus far. Bravo !
-
Damon, that light flare is superb. That kid looks like he is mad dogging someone and ready to throw done. A very nice candid. Love it.
-
John, That is very nice. I can't help but notice that her back pack is half her size or there about. A wonderful street scene. Reminds me of spring street in L.A. Great night time shooting and great colors.
-
Yury, You have come a long way. The black and white work here is very nice. Wonderful detail and tones. A true candid capturing the worker getting ready for the day. Nice.
-
Barry, Both are wonderful. I am having a tough time trying to decide which I like more. While mans facial expression coming up the stairs is well captured and the tones as well as composition is superb, I am leaning towards the lady in the green dress. That is a great candid of a beautiful lady doing what ladies do. Text all day. Nice work as usual.
-
Richard. What a great drive by. I love that type off shooting and often times we end up with gems, such as this. Well done !

 21.

Again, I think it is critical to use two, preferably identical SD cards in the two slots and use the backup mode to write each image onto both cards so that you automatically have two copies of everything. I wouldn't use the overflow mode.

Shun,
You bring up a point that I have been wondering about. I hope this not deviate from the OP question to much, but you bring up a good point. I use the back up mode myself, but have often wondered if by doing that; Does the camera slow up since it is writing to two cards? What if the back up card writes at a slower speed? What if the card is all together different (D500)Shun as I have often said, truly you are a blessing to me and this forum. Best moderator of any forum ever.

 23.
Andrew. I thank you very much for the comments.

RJ: I was disappointed when Canon got rid of their A-Dep AF mode, not that I've bought a Canon DSLR since (because I'd hopped to Nikon by then). While it had a limited amount of control, it did try to spread the midpoint of the AF across several subjects and - more importantly for me - light up all the AF sensors that thought they were in focus, which (with limited accuracy) was really useful for focus with a tilt-shift lens, especially on a camera with a pentamirror. Nikon do the same thing in auto-area autofocus, but for some reason don't make it work when you're in manual focus mode (unless you use a dandelion chip on a manual lens and the camera thinks it's autofocussing). The tilt-shift argument is why I've wanted a 4-way live view split - but I'll take the 2-way split on the D810 as better than nothing.

It sure seems that Canon is clearly behind Nikon in both Focus speed and accuracy. Atleast that is what I read online.

 24.
Thanks for the comments Ilkka

When using a single point with a longer lens to track a moving subject, it can be hard to maintain the one point exactly on the same part of the subject all the time. Group AF uses pattern recognition on the cameras with high resolution RGB matrix meters to compensate for slight variations in subject position in the frame by selecting one of the adjacent focus points to focus while the center of the five is no longer squarely on the subject. It works extremely well in my experience.

Agreed and yes, it works very well. Super fast. It rarely misses.

The D7200 has a low resolution matrix meter which doesn't support group AF.

This explains it. I did not know or consider this. Thank you !

 25.
Thanks a bunch Rodeo Joe for the response.

I'm wondering why you use group focus at all?

For those that have used it and have given it a chance, I am willing to bet that most would love it in its proper context. At first I used it for my grand kids soccer games and it rarely if ever missed. I then started to use it for street and it became most useful especially for those ''decisive moments''. Point and shoot. It rarely misses as one only needs to be close. If you shoot birds or wildlife, most any sports, this is a must.

A lens can only focus on one plane and, as you see by reviewing, only one focus point gets truly sharp focus. So if the centre AF area is nearly always the one that "hits", why not set the camera(s) to use just the centre point? And that way you know exactly where the camera's going to focus, rather than leaving it to chance.

I do depending on what I am shooting. Portraits, macro etc.

Canon tried offering a focus mode where multiple AF points were linked to the aperture in order to make the depth of field deep enough to cover the subject. However, you then lose control of both aperture and focus plane to the camera, and that mode didn't prove popular with photographers.

I know nothing about Canon, but I have read that it did not perform any place near the Nikon product.
