  1. They probably could have (Contax did it successfully) but the issue is that a Leica M's viewfinder shows 28-35mm at all times so the decision about what you are effectively focusing on is not as clear cut as it is on a regular camera. Also, focusing with a rangefinder is incredibly fast. I still focus much faster with my M10 than my Fuji GFX.
  2. Just stick to the classics: Tri-X and Portra 400. Both can be pushed to 800 really if you need more light.
  3. Here are screenshots of the test focusing on the engravings. Sorry these are phone screenshots from the website since I don't have my laptop with me. Unlesst the test was done improperly, this speaks for itself. Will still rent the camera and post comparisons later irrespective.
  4. You should all go to the DP Review studio setup that I shared earlier on. It is in a controlled environment and much more telling. Compare the A7Riv to various cameras including the GFX100, Hasselblad and Phase One cameras.
  5. Considering trading my GFX 50R with GF 120 and GF 32-64. Comes with 45 Macro extension, 2 year protection guarantee (transferable), and all original packaging. Interested in A7Riv and macro 90/2.8 lens. Camera has only be used for DSLR scanning and copying. Located in Los Angeles. PM with any questions.
  6. Will settle this by renting the A7Riv. It seems that there are benefits in my view but it will partially ately depend on how pixel shift handles grain and color aliasing. Can't wait!
  7. It is visible. My camera rental shop is closed today (duh) so my test will have to wait until next week.
  8. Actually the DP Review studio test does allow to see before and after pixel shifting. I'm still with you about the actual benefits for negative scanning and going to rent the Sony camera today or next weekend to see for myself. However, the DP Review studio setup is really worth analyzing, especially the engravings which show done read aliasing in the GFX 50 shots which are not there in the Sony and GFX 100 shots...
  9. There is but I'm aware of it. It's my 3rd Mamiya 7. Thanks
  10. I completely forgot that DPReview has their great test shots with comparisons. I just looked at the two side by side. The test allows you to see the Sony AR7IV in Pixel Shift mode and it is actually super interesting and very revealing. The Sony has better contrast and looks sharper in general but not that much compared to the GFX 50. However, when pixel peeping, the GFX introduces a lot of color pixelation/artifacts which the Sony totally eliminates in Pixel Shift mode. It thus makes the Sony much more faithful and precise. Does not totally resolve my issue and I'm still not completely sure if the change would be worth it but it keeps pushing in Sony's favor. You can play with it here: Studio shot comparison: Digital Photography Review Thanks!
  11. Las update before I send it out for repair: 1. The camera and lenses dry fire perfectly when opening the back and doing so at all speeds including bulb/B. 2. I can see the film spool turning perfectly when dry firing with the back open. 3. The counter resets properly when opening the back. 4. The light meter works well and I put a fresh battery in the camera. This is really strange. It would possibly indicate that the film spool is not recognizing that the camera has fired and that the film should be wound to the next frame.
  12. And for anybody following this thread, the lenses work perfectly as I tried them on another body.
  13. Wow! That's actually really impressive. I'm now wondering if the same difference will be visible between 50mp MF and the new Sony!
  14. Haha! Thanks Peter. I actually lived in Aberdeen for several years and going to tour the stunning Scottish Highlands next summer which I have not done in 20+ years!!!
  15. Great! Thank you. Now I'll rent a Sony and A/B. My interest around pixel shift was exactly about handling grain structure so this is encouraging.
  16. Also, I can see the meter working so the battery is working as it should from that end at least. I'll go grab another one in a minute and report back. Thanks!
  17. Yes but same model as the current one which I put in today (Duracell). Why? Thanks
  18. I just took my Mamiya 7ii out of the closet, loaded it with film, pressed the shutter for the first frame and the film advance lever/winder gets stuck there. I think the issue is probably the contacts not telling the camera that it has fired but not sure. Any suggestions? I was going to take pix of my family and I'm stuck (literally and pun intended). Before anyone asks, I did clean the contacts and tried another lens as well. I also removed the film and reloaded it. Total pain!!! Thanks, Olivier
  19. I'll just weigh in. No one has done macro tests and none on B&W film (not that it should matter in theory) and none for scanning specifically. I'll just rent the AR7 or just keep going with the GFX which is working great so far. Either way,I guess we can stop the rants unless someone has done a test ;-) The closest so far has been Jim Klasson's extensive testing. Thanks everyone!
  20. Gents - if someone knows Jim Klasson maybe they can ask him to weigh in. I love his blog and posts. He is very technical and provides detailed analysis. His review of Pixel Shifting is what got me started with this topic in the first place!
  21. It is my feeling as well and I don't get swayed by forums unless there is a clear cut answer which is not the case here. Will keep on scanning with the Fuji in the interim!
