1. Yes and has even wrote a letter by hand and posted it to PO Box 163 North Andover, MA 01845, U.S.A. I am beginning to wonder if his account migrated successfully when Photo.net did the upgrade
 2. I am writing on behalf of a friend. He has been a member since 2005 and has lost his log in details. He has tried on several occasions to recover but it just fails. He is desperate to get back on Photo, net but is at a loss at what to do next. He has sent several emails with no reply and was wondering if there is a phone number he can ring to get back into his account. Ian
 3.
If I scan some black and white negatives and save them as a Tif in Gray Gamma 2.2 from the scanner, then import them into my Lightroom catalog and perform further edits on the images, are they still in the Gray Gamma 2.2 color space or does Lightroom convert them ?

 4.
I have now reinstalled Vuescan and performed another test.

All settings on vuescan were zeroed out apart from the focus slider which I placed at 1 because I am scanning with film holder.
This was scanned at 3200ppi with a Better Scanning Holder.

The image looks flat (low contrast) which is what I would expect from a straight scan with no scanner settings applied.
From memory, I focused on the Ben Shaw text.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18940456/drinkandremote-3200ppi.jpg

 5.

The roll was underexposed and under developed, on a very flat lighting day.

If you could redevelop that film knowing what you know now, what would you do different ?

 6.

Those are not even close to what I get from my V700, with the OEM holders and ANR glass.

Do they look as though its a developing issue to you les ?

 7.
I have attached 2 scans straight from the scanner.
On this occasion I have used Vuescan Professional but I am getting similar results from Silverfast AI. I also use the Better scanning Holder with ANR glass.
These were scanned at 3200ppi 16 bit grey scale and all other default settings.
I have put both images on DropBox
Image #1 - Buttercup - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18940456/butter-cup.jpg

Image #2 - Country House - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18940456/country-house.jpg

 8.
I currently own an Epson V800 but having seen scans from my negatives on a friends Nikon 9000 ED, it clearly shows the Epson just is not delivering the results I would like from 120 roll film.
This maybe because it can scan at 4000ppi and has auto focus.
The Nikon 9000 ED would be my choice but they are currently out of my budget range. The few I have seen are listed around £2000.
Does anyone know of an alternative scanner to the Nikon 9000ED which will auto focus. Plustek is one I was reading about but have no first hand information on it.

 9.
I think I am going to remove the program and reinstall it back to its default settings

 10.
I am using the latest version of Vuescan 9.5.48 with Mac OsX
The frames seem o be all over the place. Has anyone else experienced issues.

 11.
I have seen a Mamiya 50mm C shift Lens for sale which has got me interested for my 645 Pro.

Currently, I only have the 80mm lens for the camera and sometimes I am finding it a little to long which got me thinking about something a little wider.

I do have a 24mm PCE lens for my digital setup and I do enjoy using the shift function especially for correcting verticals on buildings which is why I suddenly became interested when noticing the Mamiya 50mm C shift Lens for sale.

Thought Process.
Without applying any shift movement, this would give me a wider lens than my current 80mm al-biet not as fast but I use a tripod 99% of the time but at the same time would give me shift for when I need to correct verticals. (Win Win on both accounts, I am thinking.

Would be interested to hear any comments regarding my thought process and also any user experiences with this lens please.

 12.
I appreciate that the method of developing film can and probably does differ from one individual to another.

Having said that, I was wondering if there is a different approach required for using a scanning workflow?.

Do we need to think more about not increasing contrast to much in the negatives especially as scanners such as the consumer brands such as Epson may not be able to bring back as much detail in the highlights than that of a darkroom print process.

Just a thought as I am doing more reading on this subject.

 13.
Thanks Ray for the explanation, this is most useful and I will keep reading it over until it sinks in

 14.
Thanks john for the reply.
Most of my work up to now has been done on a tripod using FP4+ film rated at 125. I am developing them in HC-110 1:31 with normal agitaion for 9 minutes.
I am interested to hear more about what you said about ...

you have almost 2 stops less dof with the 645 format than with the d3s full frame sensor

I did read somewhere about this but the explanation was a little vague. if you could elaborate I would be appreciated as this is something i am finding looking through the negatives.

Ian

 15.
Thanks for the reply, I would have replied sooner but for some reason I am not getting any email notifications... hmmmm.

I have since looked at the negatives through a loupe under a light box i quickly made and I was impressed just how sharp they actually look.

I think the issue has to be the way I have scanner setup. The holders on the V800 are not very good, intact the film to me is slightly wider than the holder itself.

According to Epson, the adjustment o the holder needs to be on position 3 but I guess this is only a starting point. Are you just placing the cooking foil under the holder or are you folding it to make it thicker.

Am I also correct in thinking that the optics for the scanner are underneath the actual scanner bed and not in the lid ?

 16.
Sorry for the long delay, I have taken ob board everything which has been said and so far, everything appears to working as normal. The camera is a Mamiya 645 Pro

 17.
I have recently moved into MF film from Digital and have bought a Mamiya 645 Pro which came with an 80mm f/2.8 N lens.

As I will be going down the hybrid route, I also purchased the Epson V800 scanner and Silverfast AI Studio software.
So far, I am not impressed with the sharpness I am getting from the images after I have scanned them. Compared to my Nikon D3s they are extremely soft.

Now, I am aware that I may have to teach my brain to see film images in a different way, the sharpness may not be as defined as it is digital but having said that I was hoping for something a little better.

I was wondering if anyone has a RAW scan, one that has had no heavy lifting done in post production from a 645 Pro with an 80mm lens which I could see.

 18.
Does anyone know what may have gone wrong here ?
This is the second time this has happened with 2 separate cameras.
The first 3 frames are solid black and the 4th frame is about 80% black. The rest of the frames appear to be perfect.
What is baffling me is how the 3rd and forth frame appear to be blending in to each other.
Agitation didn't change throughout the process. Could it be something to do with how it landed on the patterson spiral.

Any thoughts highly aappreciated.

 19.
Thanks for the comments and feedback. I have pulled the trigger and bought the Genuine Nikon battery today. Expensive but probably better to be safe than sorry

 20.
Thanks for the replies. What are your thoughts on the 3rd party batteries.

 21.
I have 2 EN-EL4a batteries for my Nikon D3s which I purchased at the same time as the camera when it was launched.

According to the battery info in the menus, both have now reached level 3 for the life.

How critical is this and are they about to die on me ?

 22.
This issue with the PK ink is starting to worry me as I have the same issue on my 3880 which is approx. 3 years old.
The printer status monitor reported the PK cart to be 90% when in actual fact it was empty. I replaced the cart and sure enough about 1 month later the same happened again.

This time I have done some weighing and I think my maths are correct, here are the results.

New cart weighed 146g - Printer showed 100% when inserted
I have printed about 50 8x10 images and now printer shows 95% and the cart weighs 117g

If I have consumed 5% ink (according to the printer status window) then I would expect the cart to weigh 138g but it weighs 117g

The maintenance tank was at 52% when I inserted the new cart and is still at 52% so where is this ink going ?

I have experienced some ink droplets on some prints but after I cleaned the capping station and wiper blade, this issue seems to have gone away (fingers crossed)

This printer does produce beautiful prints but it is not used in a commercial environment and the thought of having to spend nearly £900 on another one worries me if this is a common issue.

I have tried to speak with Epson but to be honest, its like talking to a brick wall, all you seem to get is "Have you updated the driver"

Comments on this issue are welcome
Ian

 23.
Very interesting read Doug although it does say

Open ProfileMaker’s MeasureTool application. In the Configuring win- dow, choose your spectrophotometer model, select Reflection and uncheck the Spectral box.

but unfortunately the x-rite color munki spectrophotometer is not in the list of available models
