1.
Have had to file a number of DMCA takedown notices and it seems to be getting worse. The DMCA notice does bring results and in some instances the privider has shut down the website until the party using the image has taken it down. A couple have told the miscreants that a second notice will result in total shutdown and refusal of any more service.
If I go on the site and see more than just my image that appear to belong to others I do the notice with the ISP and don't notify the website owners at all. If it appears to to be a one time thing I'll start with the owner or the one who monitors the site. But, once I find you do it to others I'll go the mean guy route every time.
It is worth the hassle.

 2.
What is happening is simple. Payments made with orders are put in their bank account. The lab gets paid. The printroom part of the money "should" be put in their account and our part put in a escrow account collecting interest (they they are free to keep) until they write the profit checks each month.
Apparently they do not do this. They are operating like a pyramid scheme. Paying one person on the profits of someone else and then that person later as more comes in from other photographers.
I have filed a complaint with the Attorney General of the State of California and am working on one with the US Attorneys office. They do business Interstate so I am hoping that gets some results.
Am actively looking for a new provider of the services I use them for. As soon as I find one I will pull the whole thing and file suit against them - in MY jurisdiction. They have breached the contract by failing to pay on time so my contention is their clause as to jurisdiction is void as well. If the US Attorneys office gets involved it may well rise to Interstate problems and charges. One thing I will definately do is name each employee I have dealt with by name, separately and independently from the corporate entity. They are the ones making empty promises. Even if I don't get my money I will cost them some. I bet they still get paid.
Am I being mean? I don't think so. Many phone calls, emails and contact through the site and they can't get a check out on time? Excuses don't pay the bills.

 3.
Am not trying to talk you out of the lens but it seems a lot less expensive and much greater control to buy a view camera and lens and then scan the result if you don't want to print from the negative or chrome. Have tried tilt/shift in 35mm and the small viewing area made it difficult for me to get things right. The much larger ground glass of the view camera makes it easier to level and get the standards parallel to the subject matter. Then you have a large negative or chrome to work from.

 4.
"How do we tell apart underdevelopment from underexposure?"

With your underexposed negatives you will have no shadow detail. With properly exposed negatives you will have shadow detail. Even underdevelopment won't wipe it out.
Rodeo Joe posted a good example above.
Horensteins books Basic Photography and Beyond Basic Photography should be high on your list to read as they will help with your understanding of the basic exposure/development relationship.

 5.
Have been shooting 8x10 for about 20 years and the 300 Nikkor M is my usual lens. The 450 is second with the 120 the last, used a few times a year. Use to have a 210 and 240 but found I used them so seldom that I sold them.
Have mounted the 300 Nikkor M, a small and light lens, on a recessed lensboard and can keep it on the camera when folded for transport. This way I already have my most used lens on the camera when I set up.
I used to think the translation in vision from 2 1/4 to 8x10 would be fairly linear but found I shoot quite differently in the larger format. Experiment a bit if you have the chance and see what works for you.

 6.
Is it legal for US Citizens to travel to Cuba? I went on the US Site and they are "updating" the page - - from JANUARY. How slow do those government types write?
Other US Government pages have hundreds of sections. Why don't they just have a simple paragraph outlining whether we are OK to travel to Cuba or not?
Those more familiar with US Restrictions - any chance at all of problems with US authorities if a US Citizen goes to Cuba?

 8.
"Sharper Image sold gadgets and junk for more than it was worth and managed to go bankrupt, so it's irrelevant to the discussion here."
The quality of their images of jewelry makes them relevant here.
Even in digital imaging there is no substitute for higher quality images which means controlling the light and using bodies with sensors capable of rendering the fine separation and clarity of the stones, settings and metalwork.
Low end bodies and small sensors are 'good enough' when top quality is not needed.
My gem experience is mainly large format work for DeBeers. Large format due to the control the cameras provide. Get it right in the original shot and you don't have to work later. Photoshop 'changes' also call into question truth in advertising problems that may come up.

 9.
I do not know what a codec is. Is it something that will improve performance of image editing on my Windows 7 machine? Use Breezebrowser Pro for initial edits and RAW image conversion. Then Photoshop CS5 for final work on images before saving them.
Will this thing do anything productive to actually help? I ask as so many things I have tried through the years are only duplications of what the basic programs I use already do. If it can speed things up or make them more reliable I'll try it.

 10.
I posted/asked about this after having to replace a computer that was scrambled after a major lightning storm. No lightning strike to the house or power line that the power company could find. But, they surmise so much lightning so close that it scrambled a lot of stuff. Wiped out the hard drive on my computer but not the DVD's and CD's. Wiped out some of my cassette tapes as well. I was away photographing and had the digital gear with me so no problems there.
But, with Northern Lights at times bright enough to read by a major display like that 1859 show would be a problem. Probably bright enough to get a suntan... and its predicted effect on the electronics may be worth checking out. http://www.futurescience.com/emp/emp-protection.html is one site I have read. Does not sound positive at all. No, I don't know what reality is, just what I read. Maybe it is real or maybe a 'tin foil hat' thing. All I really know is that lightning that did not strike out place forced me to replace my computer and backup computer(both plugged in) and screwed up the 'surge protectors' as well as the electric clocks and tripping every breaker on the circuit panel.
So, if anyone has more info on this and what reality for us may be, would be glad to read it.
