7.
The NEF (raw) file contains all the sensor image data plus the camera settings used. You can override any of the settings for the camera picture controls, white balance etc using the data in the NEF file. The conversion to DNG usually will allow the same override capability.
The picture control setting only affects the camera produced JPEG file.

 9.
TTL does a calculation on the light being reflected from the film in the camera. You need to have/use a flash exposure compensation setting.

 14.
ViewNX2 or the new NX-D could be a better solution to the NEF file handling. You can then export to TIFF for editing in Photoshop.
I am also looking at Capture 1 as a solution. the NEF conversion was fairly good.

 15.
Hi Edward ... I was just showing that photo as an example of what a "mirror not fully retracting" looks like for the OP. I also had my D800 repaired (last year, under warranty)

 16.
This is from my D800 when the mirror was not fully retracting

The caption should read D800 not D810

 17.
The repair i had was under Warranty, so I am not sure of the cost ...

 18.
That would be the mirror not retracting during the exposure
Or the shutter
I had to have the mirror replaced on my D800 because of this
Try taking the lens off the camera, select "Mirror Up for Cleaning" and see if the mirror fully retracts

 19.
I would assume the difference is a result of the two entirely different flash control protocols used by Nikon and Canon.
The two models are probably identical except for the control signals from the camera that they respond to.
Canon and Nikon are completely different in how they control the flash mounted on the camera.
